… Eucharistic Congress in Quebec.
I don’t understand this fascination with puppetry the Church has developed.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ????
Maybe the guy with the guitar is doing Styx covers….And this is the Mister Roboto set.
This is the modren mass…Chalice made out of glass…so everyone can see….It’s still the Seventies!!!!
I wonder, did someone influencial read “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, which describes how the influence of Protestant missionaries and associated incursions made a primitive society fall apart? That book contains a very powerful description of how masks figured in the tribe’s worship. Maybe they thought that was something to be imitated. At least, that is what the images from these two puppet masses made me think of. Susan Peterson
That is so creepy.
When will the Boomer Catholics ever grow up?
Oh gawd, not those damn puppets again! And a &$%#*!@ guitar too!Come, guys, that is so last millenium! Geeze, get with the times!
Let’s look on the bright side and caption it:”The ghost of John Vianney comes from the great beyond for the soul of Marty Haugen.”or similar…
Scary… I don’t get it either.
It aint that the church is obsessed with puppets. It’s that moonbat organizers continue to inflict them on us.
I never had a nightmare that ugly (or that shabbily dressed …).Buffalo: Love your Avatar!
It was inspired by Catholic festivals in Europe and Latin America. Can’t say I like it but the people who raise the most ruckus about it seem very ill-informed.
So now that we’ve all been informed by Jeffrey, does knowledge of the source give it automatic legitimacy and make it acceptable?
I believe the puppet is meant to be an effigy of Laval, one of the great bishops and saints of Quebec’s past. Creating effigies of our saints and heroes, especially locally beloved ones, is a good and pious practice, but this example seems to come a bit short. Perhaps it’s the absurdity of the guitar-strumming fellow in front.Compare the puppet to the statue of Laval in downtown Quebec:http://www.flickr.com/photos/aschaf/335297394/There's a rather fine line between silly awkwardness and popular piety in these matters. For instance, I quite liked the Ark that was made for the Congress.
Dude’s playing a lame Yamaha cutaway dread, that’s scary enough; but it’s not the implied “absurdity” that Clavem mentions that confounds me, it’s that Geraldo Rivera intensity in his buggin’ eyes! Yikes, Jacques, here, have a hit of my absinthe, PLEASE!Actually my first associative thought upon seeing the pic:”Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse, BETELGEUSE!”
Took a closer look, not a Yamaha, maybe a Takamine, or more likely, gasp, a freakin’ FENDER acoustic! Now that takes this whole “wrong” to a whole nuther level in Danteville.
No matter what the origin, it just looks ridiculous for Eucharistic Congress. The Church should not feel like Romper Room.
…. I’m soooo glad I’m Orthodox.
At least he is wearing a cassock!
