Caravaggio

I often joke that I want to be a hermit and live in a cave away from people but only if my cave had wifi and I could bring my coffee pot and ipod. Plumbing would be preferable too. Maybe I am confusing a hermit with a pampered recluse.

So on those grounds alone I feel an affinity with St. Jerome; that and he was notoriously known for his strong will and nasty temper. So even a pious saint like Jerome has his faults, we all do. In fact, the more seedy and sordid the past the more devoted I am to the saint. It gives us hope that even the most miserable of us can over come our defects.

St. Jerome also read his Bible every day and the saying “ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ” is attributed to him. How many of us can boast that claim of daily scripture reading. Sadly, not I.
