“Eucharist” means thanksgiving…

… But I am afraid this might be taking the meaning of the word a bit too far.

The design is not my cup of tea, but can someone explain why this poor young priest is being attacked across the Internet for this? I assume that the canned goods and the like were donated by students for a food pantry or soup kitchen (as was done at my Catholic High School every year). I’ve seen the offering baskets placed before the altar during the presentation of the gifts at many churches. Is this really any different?

Yes. An altar should not be made of canned food items, and should not have an amateurish painting on the front of it. According to the GIRM (§263), “the table of a fixed altar should be of stone and indeed of natural stone.”

This doesn’t look like a fixed altar. This looks like a temporary structure for a liturgy in an auditorium or a similar space (this was, I believe, at a high school). And the altar does not appear to be “made of canned goods.” The goods are placed in front of and beneath the altar structure (although I can’t quite tell from the pictures if the goods are on a shelf or the like).

It is a temporary altar for a high school Mass.

The school was the one that felt proud enough of this sacrilege to display it publicly on the internet. I just re-posted what they boasted. And yes, there is a HUGE difference. The altar in this photo is made of Stove Top Stuffing, for heaven’s sake. The ALTAR.

PS- No one is attacking the priest.

If this isn’t an attack, I’d hate to see what qualifies as one.

        • Quittin’ time at Tara!

How about “Any priest who ignores the GRIM and celebrates Mass in his own tacky, gimmicky way is a foolish doofus.”

I’ll just take one for the team. And who can pay attention to a single word said when you put Stove Top Stuffing in front of them? That stuff is delicious.

You had me at “Hungry Jack”.

There are numerous persons attacking the priest on the school’s Facebook page. In the name of Traditionalism. Attacking a priest publically, telling him he is poorly formed and is scandalizing children.

Surely this is not a real Mass?

    • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/thecrescat Katrina Fernandez

Sadly, I believe it is. They indicated so on their fb page.

      • Athelstane

Is it? He seems like a fairly young priest…what in the name of heaven was he thinking?

And what are those objects on the, er, altar?

          Only in the new mass…
