God Uses Culture – How Egypt Influenced the Tabernacle (Ray Vander Laan)

The imagery of Ramses’ war camp at the battle of Kadesh at Abu Simbel shows remarkable similarities to the design of the tabernacle. God often communicates his desire to be with his people through familiar images and customs.

This clip is an excerpt from Ray Vander Laan’s full-length Faith Lessons™ video series Vol. 10, With All Your Heart.

The question no one (parents, pastor, S.S. teacher) was able to answer for me since about 3 grade was, “Why would God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son?”.  As an adult considering the historical and cultural context, I suspect Abraham understood this is what God would require as this is what the ANE gods in his historical/cultural context would require.  Yahweh however provided a sacrifice for Abraham, and Yahweh’s people would come to learn that a broken and contrite heart was preferred over sacrifice.  I don’t have complete understanding, who does, but homeschooling my kids and studying ancient history with them has helped make more sense or explain some of the bible.

I got to travel w/Vander Laan to Israel and Turkey several years ago. It’s amazing how often the ancient Israelites and early Christians coopted and reinterpreted symbols and images from other religions, cultures, etc… from Pharaoh to Caesar.

This ties into one of the key early points of Enns’ book The Evolution of Adam, don’t you think?

Makes sense to me that God would show them he wanted to be their king. Was watching some “Jesus for President” youtube last night by Shane Claiborne and crew, and it reminds me of that.
