Similar to many things in Haitian Voodoo, or Vodou, the path to find a Supreme Leader, or Ati, has not been simple. The Voodoo religion didn’t even have a supreme leader, until last year when legendary Vodou priest Max Beauvoir was elected to the position. After Beauvoir passed away, the position was given to Alcenat Zamor, who died from injuries resulting from a car crash back in December 2015. Zamor had pledged to carry on the work of Beauvoir, and the new Ati Joseph Comas has done the same. Comas is 61 years old and has over 30 years in the Voodoo religion. At his ceremony in February he said ” The spirits have chosen me, I obeyed.”

Challenges News reported that “Elected national Ati Saturday, February 27, 2016 by the great servitoriat, representative structure voodoo servants throughout the Republic of Haiti, Joseph Fritzner Comas is the great grand son of famous hougan Jeremiah Antoine Langonmye which it was said that it foresaw everything. And this is the eminent power of this light what pulled the Haitian proverb denotes a warning or a threat: “we sa’m louse or menm Antoine Langonmye we’l pa” (which translates literally: “Misfortunes hanging over you, even Antoine Langonmye does not provide for ” ). He received his early education at the Franco-Haitian Adventist Seminary Diquini.” (translated from Kreyol)

The video of his induction was posted earlier this week by Le Nouvelliste Haiti. Comas term as Ati will last seven years, let’s hope there are many good things to come.
