Patheos included Top Ten Websites on Islam

Rizwaan's top 10 websites on Islam

by Rizwaan Akhtar

Rizwaan at his deskWhere does a lot my information and news about Islam and Muslims come from? The web, of course. So, I thought I would share a list of my top Muslim-related websites and blogs that I read to stay informed.

1. altmuslim.com

This is, hands down, my go-to online resource for news and opinion work on and by Muslims. Since 2001, it's provided diverse voices within the Muslim community, both young and old, without fear of being self-critical. It features frequently-updated content on politics, religion, literature, and art with a unique readership at about 2 million per year.

2. altmuslimah.com

This is an unprecedented website authored by both Muslims and non-Muslims, men and women, about Islam and gender. Discussions of gender and sexuality are quite hush in the Muslim community, which allows for pressing issues in the community to pass without being addressed, making this site an incredibly valuable forum for dialogue.

3. On Faith

The On Faith blog has a great format that features a diverse bank of opinion leaders who blog each week about one topic. Ten perspectives on the Swiss Minaret ban one week, blasphemy the next, and so on.

4. Abdul-Hakim Murad's blog

A blog run by the notable shaykh, translator, and scholar in the UK at Cambridge University. He has spent years studying with scholars in the Middle East and holds nuanced views about religion, theology, and Islam in the UK. His often quirky "Contentions" and thought provoking articles are always a very good read.

5. Muslim Voices

Muslim Voices is a nice news site with a variety of content on Islam and Muslims that cater toward a lay audience, unfamiliar with Islam, I think. Their mission is to increase understanding and promote dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims. But it's their Twitter that is really great, providing articles and links to almost every news flash related to Muslim communities in the West.

6. Goatmilk: An Intellectual Playground

Written and edited by Wajahat Ali, a popular and creative journalist, Goatmilk is a blog that features his writings and others' related to religion, politics, literature, and art. His blog is ranked in the top 7% of all political blogs by blogged.com.

7. Patheos

Patheos serves as a very informative resource on world religions with very objective material and interesting opinion pieces by renowned scholars. It's sort of a Wikipedia just on religion.

8. emel magazine

Emel magazine is a unique Muslim lifestyle publication that caters more specifically to British Muslims, filled with stories on fashion, art, travel, dining and more.

9. Zaytuna Institute

Zaytuna is an institute that is becoming America's first accredited Muslim seminary. They are foremost an educational and community institution, so their online content is appears infrequently. They have good articles and podcasts, that deal mainly with spirituality and faith.

10. Muslim West Facts Project

The Muslim West Facts Project is an unparalleled resource when it comes to finding data on Muslims' opinions on religion, politics, the West, and everyday needs. Suprising statistics and informative analysis is what you will find here.
