I’m a huge fan of fountain pens. (See here.) In fact, I rarely use anything but a fountain pen, even to underline in books. When I travel I use a Waterman pen with blue ink to leave a reminder that blue ink means vacation and travel. Otherwise I rotate through my small collection of fountain pens. I enjoyed this piece: Here’s something to think about: How many times have you used a pen today? Maybe you crossed something off of... Read more

We are back in action after a week off from Weekly Meanderings during our Spring Break. Gotta read this one by Pastor Matt: “I was shocked that such brutality could happen right outside the doors to our church building but I was glad to know that God has raised up young men who are willing to move into the most crime ridden area of our town and reach out to the “least among us” for Jesus Christ.  I hope and... Read more

From AP: KELLER, Texas (AP) – The administrator of a North Texas city believes he’s not needed and has laid himself off. Keller City Manager Dan O’Leary announced his decision Wednesday. O’Leary says the Fort Worth-area city of nearly 40,000 has two assistant managers and really does not need a third administrator. He earns about $176,000 annually as manager of the city about 20 miles north of Fort Worth. The 57-year-old O’Leary, who was hired in 2007, says he has... Read more

From Washington Post: I do wonder why this isn’t more of a campaign issue among the GOP and why not more of this is in the discussion. Obamacare dominated the 2010 midterms, driving its Democratic authors to a historic electoral shellacking. But since then, the issue has slipped quietly underground. Now it’s back, summoned to the national stage by the confluence of three disparate events: the release of new Congressional Budget Office cost estimates, the approach of Supreme Court hearings... Read more

How did they get there? Because the Gideons put them there! The Gideon Bible is not some special version or translation of the Bible that hotels really like (the books are usually plain old King James Versions); they’re named for the group that distributes them…. The Gideons don’t go room to room themselves, slipping the books in nightstands like Bible elves. When a hotel opens, local Gideons members will present a Bible to the hotel’s general manager in a small... Read more

From  YUDHIJIT BHATTACHARJEE: SPEAKING two languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.... Read more

There aren’t that many “great” theologians when it comes to paradigm-shifting and you-have-to-read theologians. Asia Minor produced the Cappadocians — Gregory of Nyssa, Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, North Africa produced Tertullian and Augustine, France produced Aquinas, Germany spawned Luther, Switzerland (or France) gave us Calvin, England led to Anselm … but when it comes to the USA, who is its theologian? If one measures influence on students, on ministers, and on readers surely Jonathan Edwards is not America’s theologian.... Read more

I will be posting in a minute or so on Charles Hodge, but to illustrate Hodge’s approach to life and Christian devotion, I want to provide a letter he wrote to his nephew, Hugh Lenox Scott: Dear Lennie, Never pass a day without reading the Bible and calling upon God in prayer. Learn to pray aways. The Lord Jesus is ever near you. It does not take long to say: “Lord preserve me; Lord help me; Lord keep me from... Read more

Some of you know, perhaps from reading my One.Life, that some of our North Park students are involved in or on a 7000 mile walk from Cape Town to north Africa in an effort to raise money for water. March 22 is World Water Day… so here is an announcement and an offer from Amy Russell. Consider this my invitation to you to drink water and to join us in supporting the raising of funds for water for those who... Read more

We are all molded by a variety of influences and influencers – those who encourage and those who discourage. Nature, genes, environment, nurture, circumstance, heroes, the Spirit… parents, grandparents, pastors, professors, friends. We are also products of our time and culture. The way we interact with important issues in relationships – whether it be with colleagues, family, or friends is quite important. One of the things that struck me about Karl Giberson’s new book The Wonder of the Universe was... Read more
