A proposed amendment in Ohio would mean that anybody getting an abortion could be arrested and tried for aggravated murder: A proposal to amend the Ohio Constitution to classify abortion as aggravated murder has been presented to the Ohio attorney general for review. Petitions were submitted Friday to Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office — the first step in a long process to reach the Ohio ballot. DeWine must decide whether the proposal moves to the second step by Monday. A... Read more
So the Zika virus is promulgating within the United States now. You may be asking yourself why Congress hasn’t done anything. The answer is because Republicans won’t help stop it unless we give them political concessions: Congressional funding for combating the Zika virus is being held hostage to anti-women politics. The Zika virus can cause dreadful brain damage, including microcephaly, to embryos and fetuses, as well as life-threatening reactions in some adult patients. The virus has spread around the globe,... Arkansas State Senator Jason Rapert is pushing for a ten commandments monument on the AR capitol grounds. This, he says, is about history, and not religion. Ironically, the ten commandments itself says lying is a no-no, but that doesn’t stop Rapert. The Satanic Temple is already applying to put a Baphomet statue up next to it (or in front of it). When that request is denied, Rapert will lose a lawsuit. The state will pay the cost, and it will... Read more
Denmark isn’t as atheistic as you might think, with about 79% of its citizens claiming Christianity. Not only that, the Denmark Constitution helps religion out tremendously by establishing the Lutheran Church as the state church, requiring the monarch to be a member of that church, requiring people to financially support their chosen church via taxation, and giving subsidies to the state church. However, polling as recently as 2008 suggests that just 25% of Danes believe Jesus is the son of God,... Read more
Good morning, everybody! Watermelon cat Oh man, I am so pumped to be back doing voice lessons. It turns out I’ll actually have 27 students this semester, and yesterday I got to work with five new ones. One in particular displayed a good work ethic, solid focus, and has a naturally resonant voice. And she’s a junior, so I get her for two years. And that’s on top of all the top tier returning talent I have in my studio.... Read more
Before I ship off to teach the youngsters, here’s a look at what’s going on in the world. Michele Bachmann says Trump’s immigration policies (which don’t exist) will “turn America back to god.” This will presumably be accomplished by deporting people who are near homogeneously Catholic. Trump calls Phyllis Schlafly, the woman who fought the Equal Rights Amendment, a “champion for women.” Right. Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), who has said he’s supporting Trump, is asked if he has confidence in Trump... Read more
Good morning, all! First, here’s your little bit of morning cheer for today: Little fella is thirsty Fall voice lessons start today. Like the Spring, I’ll be teaching on Wednesdays and Sundays. Today I get to take on five new students, some of whom I can see have lots of potential. The first voice lesson always run pretty much the same. First, I always try to ascertain their level of comfort with physical touch. Sometimes making physical contact is simply... Read more
Obama being Obama and trying to get the world on board with fighting global warming: President Obama and President Xi Jinping of China formally committed the world’s two largest economies to the Paris climate agreement here on Saturday, cementing their partnership on climate change and offering a rare display of harmony in a relationship that has become increasingly discordant. On multiple fronts, like computer hacking and maritime security, ties between China and the United States have frayed during the seven and... Read more
Let’s start the day with the elephant in the room: Phyllis Schlafly is dead. For those wondering who she was or the impact she had on our country, I’ll start with one of the most pernicious examples. Schlafly was largely responsible for the failure of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. She once told Time Magazine that if the ERA had passed, same-sex marriage would’ve been legalized 25 years sooner: It kills me to think of all that lost... Read more
