Today we talk a lot about human rights and almost nothing about responsibilities. Whatever people might feel about the rights and wrongs of the invasion of Iraq the soldiers must surely amaze us. How in this modern society of me and my needs do the find it in themselves to put their very lives on the line? Jesus showed us the way when he was tempted. Asked by the devil to manipulate material things to meet his needs, he declared his satisfaction not in money or possessions to meet his needs but rather the word of God.
Asked to manipulate God to demonstrate his care for him by naming and claiming a promise out of context he (unlike some modern faith disciples) refused to put God to the test.
Asked to manipulate others to get power he refused, acknowleding God is the only source of power and only one worthy of our unquestioning service.
Money/posessions to meet my needs, seeing God as our servant, and seeking power over others- sound familiar at all?
