More On Wisdom September 8, 2009

I continue today sharing some notes on wisdom.

7. God’s Word Imparts Wisdom

Prayer for wisdom and the anointing some have does not remove the need for us to seek God’s wisdom in the Bible:

Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

2 Tim 3:15 “…the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

8. Wisdom DOES consist of pithy sound-bites
Proverbs HAS to become one of your favorite books if you want to be wise.

The reading plan (ESV Every Day In The Word) I use gives me a verse or two per day all year which is one of the main reasons I chose it!

But some of these are not universally applicable, and wisdom consists of knowing which principle to apply when eg:

Proverbs 26:4-5 Answer not a fool according to his folly,lest you be like him yourself.
Answer a fool according to his folly,lest he be wise in his own eyes.

9. Wisdom must be sought

Read Prov 1:1-7 “1:1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

2 To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
3 to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;
4 to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth
5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
6 to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Prov 2:20-25 20
Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
23 If you turn at my reproof, [1]
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I have called and you refused to listen,
have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
25 because you have ignored all my counsel
and would have none of my reproof,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when terror strikes you,

10. The truly wise do not believe they are
Prov 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 26:12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Its a bit like humility. As soon as someone says to you “I am humble” you know they are not. The same applies here–we are ALL learning.

11. Wisdom can be learnt from creation

Prov 6:6 “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise”

If from the ants, surely at times even from unbelieverseg management techniques, CBT, etc

12. Wisdom is Learnt Through Rebukes

Proverbs 9:7-9 Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

Prov 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Proverbs 27:5-6 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.

Prov 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another

Who have you given permission to speak into your life to?
