I spent the last week giving a brief overview of the teaching of Romans on the atonement. I will today turn to Romans 8. This is one of the most glorious chapters of the whole Bible, and much gain can be had from studying and memorizing the entire chapter. Today, we are interested only in the first few verses. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life... Read more

Tim Challies has started a series stemming from the seminar he lead at the Basics Conference last week in Cleveland. He has some interesting facts and insights into the medium of blogging and the world we know as the blogosphere. He starts off with these comments: “I . . .found that there was a lot that was worth saying when I looked deeper than the simple nuts and bolts of blogging. When I dug a little bit deeper and looked... Read more

The Associated Press has reported the following: “The Rev. Jerry Falwell has died, a Liberty University executive said Tuesday. He was 73. Earlier, the executive said Falwell was hospitalized in “gravely serious” condition after being found unconscious in his office. Ron Godwin, the executive vice president of Falwell’s Liberty University, said Falwell was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but “he has a history of... Read more

Most Mondays I take the time to raid my electronic version of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ materials, which is produced by Logos Bible Software. Today I want to share a quote from the Doctor which could have been written with current events in mind. There really is nothing new under the sun, and the battles we face today are no different in many ways from those faced by others who have gone before us. The following words should be read carefully.... Read more

9Marks has announced a conference entitled Gospel Growth vs. Church Growth. Here is the information from the website: Tuesday October 30 — Thursday November 1, 2007 Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. About the conferenceIt’s hard for pastors not to be mesmerized by church growth. Who doesn’t want their congregation to grow? Who doesn’t want to see numbers and budgets increasing year by year? And who isn’t greatly interested when the latest growth model comes along, the latest research, the... Read more

UPDATE – “Raised With Christ” is the title of my new book. Last Resurrection Sunday I ended with a quote from N. T. Wright which stated we were meant to be people of the resurrection. I think that phrase of his hints at what I mean by the resurrection empowered life. It is no accident that Protestant crosses tend to be empty for, like the tomb, the cross of Christ is indeed empty. I have already spoken about how it... Read more

Mark Lauterbach (affectionately known as “Gandalf”) is at it again with another thought provoking post: A number of years ago we decided not to ask people if they were interested in the Bible, but to ask if they were interested in learning more about Jesus. In the times we have tried this direction, we find most people are interested in Jesus, for whatever reasons. They think he is wonderful. But he is wonderful in a way that makes no sense.... Read more

ScottyB is excited about evangelism following a talk by his pastor and provides a link to the mp3. Scotty says this: “Our senior pastor, Rich Richardson, preached at Covenant Life Church (Joshua Harris, C. J. Mahaney) in Gaithersburg, MD on the Sunday following the SGM 2007 Leadership Conference. If you ever feel discouraged in evangelism, I heartily commend this sermon to you — Jesus is the Light of Men.” In another post, Scotty has collected a list of Gospel-centered blogs... Read more

Terry Virgo has started a blog. Although I’ve known about it for awhile, I waited until now to tell you about it. He has written his fourth post, and it seems that he’s got the blogging bug — already I’m enjoying his writings there greatly. Today’s post is entitled God on a Mountain. Speaking first about Jesus healing thousands on top of a mountain, Terry mentions Mel Gibson’s The Passion before bringing us back to the mountain: “… Recently I... Read more

As regular readers will know, I have been spending the last week giving a brief overview of the teaching of the book of Romans in connection with the atonement. I will continue with that next week, but I wanted to bring to your attention, if you are not already aware of it, Dr. John Piper’s masterful exposition of the whole book of Romans. Every single sermon is available to read and listen to online for free, and many of them... Read more
