I just lost at chess to my daughter Tamasain who is not yet nine! In my defence I did surrender my queen voluntarily at the beginning of the game, but in what might be a scent of things to come, I totally missed her ability to swoop down with her castle to do a basic “back row” checkmate. I had no defences that would stop it and as she helpfully pointed out afterwards I should have moved a pawn forward... Read more

I have been looking through the archives and found an old series of tag blogging David Wayne and I did on counselling- I miss those days of tag blogging with the Jollyblogger! We began by looking at What is Christian Counseling and personality types then Joolyblogger asked about “What about depression?” we were both eager to point out that whilst depression can have biological causes, false expectations can be a major contributory factor. I also spoke of Addiction , the... Read more

I have been having a lot of fun fiddling with my blog template this morning and incorporating del.icio.us items in it. Let me know what you think. There is more to come I am sure….. Read more

ryan wentzel is clearly with me in my view that old blog posts should never die. He has put together some great firefox search plugins which search this and other blogs. Now all we need is for someone to write one for the ESV bible search available at the ESV Website and a way of forcing google to search multiple domains at once from a search box and I will be technologically satisfied (at least for a week or so!)... Read more

I am writing this post with the aid of some blogging technology which is new to me. I can see it is going to cause me lots of fun in the future, and you will see the effects around this blog a whole lot more. (HT: Jollyblogger who linked to The Best Web 2.0 software) The exciting technology is Del.icio.us which has made its mark on my sidebar already, and I suspect may eventually take over all my blogroll requirements.... Read more

Google never ceases to amaze me. Out of all the millions of websites out there it has become very good at working out which sites belong in the same family as mine! To see David Wayne, Tim Challies, Phil Johnson and of course the Blogdom of God making up the top five is awesome as what human God blogger wouldn’t have put me in the same blog family as each of them? Of course, the only slightly weird thing is... Read more

Solo Femininity has helpful words which she writes as a single facing the holiday season alone: “When you have a hope deferred, the holidays can be a bittersweet time. Unbidden emotions–grief, confusion, self-pity, sadness–can suddenly wash over you without warning. The holiday season can be like a landmark in time–‘wasn’t I here in exactly the same situation last year?’–commemorating the creep of time. That’s the bitter part, but there is also the sweet part if we stand like a sentinel... Read more

Parableman has an interesting post about the way ESV and TNIV advocates tend to talk past each other without understanding. Essentially these two translations differ because their aim is different. The TNIV aims to translate the sense or meaning of the bible into todays languange, whilst the ESV aims to translate the actual form or words of the bible into English, and at times is more concerned with accuracy to the form than readability. Personally, I would advocate using a... Read more
