Blogotional: believes that more than preaching is needed for our lives to be transformed. I do beleive that God uses other means, but I also believe that there is more of a link between our initial salvation and working out that salvation than it seems my friend is implying. Faith is what saves and transforms us in my view and the primary source for that faith is hearing preaching- yes other things help but listening to preaching is the most... Read more

jakebouma cites the posts on the English Standard Version and in particular John Piper’s strident endorsement of it as contributing to his decision to buy himself one. Hurrah! Its great to know that blogging is having an impact. Any other recent converts, do let me know! Meanwhile, the Reformation Study Bible ESV version is of course a major reason to make the jump. Especially as you can get it imprinted with someones name at the chritian bookstore I just linked... Read more

Many years ago, I participated in a week of outreach led by Lex Loizidesat the end of the week he presented everyone with a copy of a paperback Christian book- C. H . Spurgeon’s the soulwinner. Why that book you might well ask. Why would a book written during the Victorian era in London make my list of books every christian should read? Quite simply there is no book more calculated to unsettle us from our willingness to accept a... Read more

John Piper was frequently quoted by other bloggers who like me love the ESV, heres what he says, he goes onto list some specific examples: Not only am I not on board. I would be happy to see the NIV sail into the sunset if it could be replaced by the ESV as the standard preaching, reading, memorizing Bible of the English-speaking church. I feel so strongly about this that I volunteered to do this tonight before I was asked.... Read more

In a way that still feels bizarre to me, it is often the case that bloggers post on the same subject without as each other within days of each other without realising (or indeed in one case with me and David Wayne 1 minute!). So I was surpised as ever to find that I am not the only person posting on the English Standard Version at the moment. It seems I am not the only one who loves the ESV.... Read more

Not every death is a great tragedy. Some you welcome as a relief for the person concerned. Whilst death always feels not quite right, am I the only one who is glad that a certain old man no longer has the world’s media examining his every shake of the hand and drool of the mouth? As more and more of the media age’s heroes leave this world of pain, what will the media make of their deaths. Whether you were... Read more

In my mind, the book that every Christian should read, and second in value only to the Bible, is Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. Even the casual reader of the Bible has asked questions of the “I wonder what the Bible has to say about . . .” nature. Systematic Theology may sound offputting to some, but all it means is that the author is attempting to answer that question in an organized manner. It is sad that so many Christians... Read more

I have decided it is time I share my thoughts with you about books. I love books. There is something rather satisfying about sitting down with a real book flicking through its pages, which despite my love of everything electronic is not quite replaced by looking at a PC screen. I have benefited so much from books over the years that I thought I would share a little about books that I have read and loved and that I feel... Read more
