I hope you will enjoy this challenging article as much as I did: “I have learned something in recent years. People come to cherish words like atonement and justification when you expose them to other words like bloodguilt and reckoning. I’ve tried to teach gospel-centric words effectively as stand-alone concepts. It has produced a few amens, yet lives were not radically altered toward God and the good works he has prepared for us to do. I was serving coffee at... Read more

Tom Shaw is a great friend of mine.  He is passionate about reaching a lost generation for Jesus.  Mobilise UK exists to help you get caught up with Christ’s mission for a group who go to church less often than any of those that have gone before for centuries. Watch him here, then book in to Mobilise UK. Read more

I thought I would share some results since I improved the charismatic spectrum test. It definitely isn’t labeling everyone as a charismatic any more. Since the rewrite we have had: 3% strong doctrinal cessationists who all are also experiential cessationists 7% mild doctrinal cessationists who are all experiential cessationists 24% mild doctrinal charismatics, approximately 50% of whom were experiential cessationists The rest were all strong charismatics around 5% of whom still scored as cessationists So it is still the case... Read more

Pop over to the charismatic spectrum post first before reading this one. I have looked at the first batch of survey entries, and it seems clear that some of my questions are eliciting more “Yes’s” than they should, especially the beliefs section. So, any thoughts on why and how these selected questions need rewording so that a cessationist is more likely to disagree with them? This process of understanding what we do and do not believe is where the previous... Read more

Following on from yesterdays post on a charismatic spectrum, I do intend to try and improve the questionnaire, and if necessary tweak some of the categories I used. Some of the comments I received anonymously are really helpful, and so I thought I would share them here, partly to prompt further discussion, I have removed anything that might identify people from these comments: “Just a thought, but I think that many of our divisions in the broad Christian Church are... Read more

Today, in the tradition of my previous Arminocalvinist Spectrum, Evolution vs Creationism Spectrum and Spectrum of belief on hell and salvation  I present a “Charismatic-cessationist spectrum.”  For some more background on this issue, and a fairly typical charismatic perspective see my series of posts on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.  As usual this may be a bit of a living document for a couple of days as I welcome suggestions for improvement from others. Intriguingly this spectrum is much harder to label than the previous... Read more

Bob Roberts (one of our speakers at the next 300 leaders) has a great post today entitled The Three Constants of the Great Commission: “First – the coming of the Holy Spirit which is the power to fulfill the Great Commission.  It is present in all passages from baptizing in the name of the “Father, Son & Holy Spirit” to being “clothed with power from on high” to “signs and wonders” that go as the Gospel is spread.  The lesson... Read more

For the last few weeks my pastor, Tope Koleoso, has been preaching a series on grace. It has been outstanding and many have had a fresh revelation of issues like our identity as saints, rather than sinners, of imputed righteousness, and of how we can grow more like Jesus. He finished yesterday with a summary of the series and a clear word on the imperative of forgiveness. I encourage you to watch it here, or visit the Jubilee site for... Read more

Amazon’s Kindle website gives an interesting snapshot of books by sharing the post popular highlights by people using Kindle software to read a book. Generally you get a good impression of a book, and it’s most striking themes. This is certainly true with Calvin’s Institutes, where his desire to point us away from ourselves and towards a God who is infinitely better than us rings out loud and clear. Here are some examples of popular quotes: we cannot aspire to... Read more
