Donald Trump for President—Again? Really?

Donald Trump for President—Again? Really? October 21, 2024

Let’s be clear: Christians, especially those who claim to follow the teachings of Jesus, should have nothing to do with Donald Trump. I mean, I thought this was obvious, but apparently, some people need a little reminder. And by “some people,” I mean those who are still mesmerized by this walking embodiment of everything that’s antithetical to the message of Jesus.

You see, the whole point of Christianity, as I understand it, is to align ourselves with the teachings of a man who advocated for the poor, called for love of enemies, and put marginalized folks front and center. Now, if I’m wrong, and Jesus was actually the world’s first reality TV star, promoting greed, narcissism, and xenophobia, then sure, by all means, let’s give Donald Trump the Christian seal of approval.

But here’s the thing: I’m not wrong. Trump, on the other hand? He’s wrong on so many levels it’s like he’s inventing new dimensions of what it means to be wrong.

Let’s start with his “moral leadership.” Now, I use that term loosely because we’ve all seen what Trump has to offer in that department. Remember the Access Hollywood tape? The way he bragged about grabbing women by the… well, you know. Or how about the fact that 26 women have accused him of sexual assault? Twenty-six! If we’re talking about someone we’d consider for Sunday School leadership, let alone President of the United States, those are some big red flags.

And yet, Christians are still supporting him. How? Why?

I’ll tell you why. Because, for some, Christianity has become less about following Jesus and more about preserving a political power structure. And that’s where things get dangerous. When you start baptizing political leaders into sainthood despite their complete disregard for Christian ethics, you’ve gone off the rails.

I get it. Some Christians are concerned about abortion or religious freedom or whatever else Fox News is feeding them. But here’s the deal: When your political leader threatens democracy, scapegoats entire communities, and shows no regard for truth, justice, or compassion, you’re not following Jesus—you’re following a cult leader.

And let’s talk about the cult of Trump for a second. This guy literally has churches that fly Trump flags and hold “Trump worship services.” I wish I was kidding. Could you imagine that happening with Obama? Or Bush? Obama didn’t have people pulling into church parking lots with his face plastered on their trucks like some bizarre political prophet. Trump does. And that’s because this isn’t just about politics anymore—it’s a full-blown cult.

Look, I’m not saying every politician is a saint. I have my issues with plenty of them. But Trump? This guy is the embodiment of everything Jesus told us to stand against: greed, violence, oppression, and pride. He’s literally weaponizing the National Guard against people who disagree with him and promising to deport millions of people—many of whom are the very neighbors Jesus told us to love and care for.

If you’re a Christian and you’re still on the Trump train, I have to ask—what Bible are you reading? Because it sure isn’t the one I’ve been talking about for years. Jesus didn’t endorse cruelty, division, or lies. He called us to something radically different. If we can’t see that Trump is the antithesis of this message, then we’ve lost the plot entirely.

It’s time to wake up before it’s too late. Trump isn’t your savior. He’s a dangerous, narcissistic demagogue who’s doing more to destroy the Christian witness than anyone I’ve seen in my lifetime. And as a follower of Jesus, that should bother you.

So, no, Donald Trump is not qualified to be president. He’s not qualified to lead a nation, a Bible study, or even a conga line. Christians need to reject him and everything he stands for—because when you compare his behavior to the teachings of Jesus, it’s obvious: Trump doesn’t stand a chance.
