Why We Must Reject Trump: A Call for Justice and Unity

Why We Must Reject Trump: A Call for Justice and Unity November 5, 2024

As we approach another election day, it’s crucial to reflect deeply on what our vote signifies—not just for ourselves but for the communities we represent and the values we uphold. In my writings, podcasts, and social media platforms, I have consistently advocated for a world rooted in justice, equity, and love. Thus, I find it necessary to articulate why voting for Donald J. Trump on this day and in these United States is not just a political choice but a profound moral failure that contradicts the teachings of Jesus, the true essence of masculinity, the rights of women and of people of color, and the dignity of queer individuals.

The Teachings of Jesus vs. the Trump Agenda

Central to the message of Jesus is the call to love one another, particularly the marginalized. Jesus championed the cause of the oppressed, advocated for peace, and demonstrated compassion. His life was a model of selflessness, offering us a blueprint for how to engage with the world. To vote for Trump, a man whose rhetoric often fosters division, fear, and hatred, is to endorse a stance that stands in stark contrast to Christ’s teachings.

In my book Heretic!, I explore the radical inclusivity of Jesus, challenging us to reflect on those who would end up being left out of Trump’s vision for America. If our faith leads us to embody love, empathy, and justice, we must resist any leader who actively works against these core tenets. It’s essential to recognize that Jesus did not come to reinforce societal hierarchies or endorse systems that perpetuate oppression. Rather, he called for the dismantling of such structures, inviting all to participate in a new kingdom defined by equity and grace.

Moreover, Trump’s record on issues such as immigration, healthcare, and economic inequality reveals a fundamental disregard for the most vulnerable among us. His administration’s policies have often exacerbated the very injustices Jesus sought to heal. Therefore, to align oneself with Trump’s political agenda is to compromise the integrity of our faith and to turn a blind eye to the suffering of our neighbors. We cannot remain silent when a candidate boasts of sexual misconduct, undermines democratic institutions, and disregards the plight of the needy. The stakes are far too high.

A True Reflection of Masculinity

As men, we are called to embody strength, integrity, and the courage to uplift others. In many places, especially my book The Wisdom of Hobbits, I emphasize the importance of humility and service—qualities that starkly contrast with Trump’s often braggadocious persona. True masculinity is not defined by wealth, power, or aggression but by the ability to listen, empathize, and support those in need.

The archetype of masculinity that Trump presents is one steeped in arrogance and dominance. Voting for Trump reflects a regression into toxic masculinity, one that seeks to dominate rather than empower. We must stand against leaders who perpetuate harmful stereotypes and advocate for a version of manhood that is compassionate, just, and respectful. True strength lies in vulnerability and the willingness to confront our biases and shortcomings.

Furthermore, this false masculinity is dangerous not only to those around us but also to the men who embody it. It creates an environment where emotional expression is stifled and authentic relationships are sacrificed at the altar of bravado. As men of faith, we should be cultivating spaces that promote healing and growth, rejecting the notion that vulnerability is a weakness. We are called to champion a vision of masculinity that encourages nurturing, protects the dignity of all individuals, and stands in solidarity with those who are oppressed.

Women Against Abusers

Women deserve a society where they are respected, valued, and free from abuse. The rhetoric surrounding Trump has often trivialized the experiences of women, reducing their struggles to mere political talking points. As a father and husband who has written about the necessity of elevating women’s voices, I cannot stand idly by as a candidate emerges who embodies patriarchal oppression.

In recent years, we have witnessed a broader societal reckoning with issues of misogyny and abuse, a movement fueled by brave women who have come forward to share their stories. Trump’s dismissive attitude toward women and his history of predatory behavior directly contradict the principles of respect and dignity we are called to uphold as a society.

Voting for Trump signals acceptance of a culture that seeks to push women back into subservient roles, minimizing their autonomy and agency. We must stand in solidarity with women everywhere–even those who would choose their own oppression—affirming their right to live freely without fear of repression or violence. Every vote cast for Trump is a vote against the dignity and rights of women—an endorsement of a worldview that denies them their rightful place in society.

We must also engage in meaningful conversations about the role of women in leadership and decision-making. Supporting candidates who advocate for gender equity and the empowerment of women is crucial. As I’ve argued in my blogs on this channel, the future must be one where women’s voices are not only heard but amplified, leading to a more just and equitable world for all.

Queer Resistance Against Homophobia

For queer individuals, the stakes are particularly high. We have fought long and hard for recognition and rights, only to see a political figure who openly aligns himself with homophobic rhetoric and policies. I’ve said it before and hopefully I won’t have to say it again, but voting for Trump/MAGA would mean endorsing a future where queer folks are not just marginalized but systematically oppressed.

The rise of LGBTQ+ rights has been one of the most significant social movements of our time, yet it faces persistent backlash from those who would prefer to see us erased. A Trump vote signals complicity in a system that seeks to erase our identities and push us back into the shadows. As queer individuals and allies, we must stand firm against those who wish to silence us, advocating for a world where love is love and all identities are celebrated.

This is not merely a personal issue; it’s a collective one. We must cultivate an inclusive community that values and uplifts diverse identities, recognizing the beauty in our differences. It is essential to challenge the narratives that seek to dehumanize and delegitimize queer lives. By voting against candidates who perpetuate these harmful ideologies, we affirm our commitment to a future where everyone can thrive, free from fear and discrimination.

Rejecting Racism: Upholding Dignity and Justice for All

Trump’s racism is not merely a reflection of personal prejudice but a manifestation of a broader societal malaise that seeks to normalize hatred and division. Throughout his presidency and beyond, he has consistently employed racist rhetoric, from his comments about immigrants to his failure to unequivocally denounce white supremacists. This behavior perpetuates a culture that dehumanizes entire communities, fueling systemic inequalities that have plagued our nation for centuries.

As individuals of faith and conscience, we must stand firmly against this racism, not only because it violates the fundamental tenets of love and compassion we are called to embody but also because it undermines the very fabric of our society. By rejecting Trump’s divisive language and policies, we affirm our commitment to a more just and equitable world—one where all individuals, regardless of their race or ethnicity, are treated with dignity and respect.

In this fight against racism, we honor the lives and struggles of those who have been marginalized and affirm our shared humanity, recognizing that true justice can only be achieved when we collectively stand against the forces that seek to divide us.

Reflecting on the Voter’s Conscience

Ultimately, the choice to vote for Trump goes beyond the candidate himself; it reflects the values and priorities of the voter. To support a leader whose actions and words are antithetical to justice, compassion, and respect is to betray the very ideals we claim to uphold.

We must ask ourselves: What does a Trump vote say about us? Are we willing to compromise our ethics, our faith, and our identities for the sake of allegiance to a man who embodies division and hostility? This question demands introspection. In a time where moral clarity is essential, we must not allow fear or convenience to dictate our choices.

In my journey as a writer and advocate, I have seen the potential for goodness, hope, and healing within our communities. But this potential is squandered when we fail to recognize the implications of our choices. We must not only consider our personal interests but the broader impact of our votes on society as a whole.

Additionally, it is essential to understand the implications of our engagement in the political arena. Politics is not just a matter of policy; it reflects our collective values and aspirations. By choosing to support candidates who align with our moral compass, we actively participate in the shaping of our future—a future that honors the dignity of every individual.

A Call to Action

Election day is here, so let us stand united in our refusal to support a candidate who represents everything that is wrong with our political landscape. We are called to act—not out of hatred for Trump, but out of love for each other and the principles we hold dear.

Let us cast our votes as affirmations of our commitment to justice, dignity, and the radical love exemplified by Jesus. It is time to reflect deeply on our values and to ensure our choices align with the world we wish to create. May our votes serve as a beacon of hope, guiding us toward a future characterized by compassion and inclusivity.

In this critical moment, I pray to God we rise to the occasion and reject the call to darkness, choosing instead the path of light, love, and unity for all. We have the power to shape a narrative that uplifts, empowers, and affirms the humanity of every individual. Let us embrace this responsibility and be the change we wish to see, not just on election day but every day. Together, we can create a future where justice reigns, and love prevails, bringing us closer to the world that Jesus envisioned.
