During a recent episode of The God Squad, we dove into a topic that has been on all our minds for a while: the cult-like nature of the MAGA movement. And, as the conversation unfolded, it became abundantly clear that I wasn’t the only one seeing the parallels.
We’ve all seen how cults operate. They create an environment where critical thinking is not just discouraged, but outright punished. Anyone who questions the leader is excommunicated—cut off, shamed, and silenced. That’s the vibe I get when I look at the MAGA crowd, and honestly, it’s more than just a vibe. It’s a fact.
Throughout the conversation, we kept circling back to this point: MAGA has all the hallmarks of a cult. The unwavering loyalty to Trump, no matter what scandal or lawsuit he’s embroiled in. The way his supporters defend him, not based on facts or policy but on sheer, blind devotion. It’s disturbing. I mean, it’s Trump all the way for these people, as if nothing else matters. He literally COULD shoot someone on 5th Avenue and his supporters would still support him. And that’s not how a democracy is supposed to function.
At one point, I said something that still echoes in my mind: “It is a cult. This is the way cults work.” And honestly, I stand by that. Trump is treated like some messianic figure—someone who can do no wrong. His followers believe that he’s the only one who can “save” America, which is exactly how cult leaders manipulate their followers. It’s classic. They present themselves as the sole answer, the only truth, the beacon of hope that everyone else is too blind to see.
And let’s not pretend this is all accidental. Trump has leaned into this persona, encouraging the fanaticism around him. He knows how to manipulate emotions, play the victim, and stir up hatred against anyone who dares challenge his narrative. It’s what cult leaders do—create a “them” versus “us” mentality. If you’re not with Trump, you’re the enemy. Just look at how quickly he discards those who were once his staunch allies, the moment they no longer serve his purpose. The way MAGA turns on its own for daring to question “the leader” is exactly how a cult preserves its power.
And here’s the real danger: When you have millions of people willing to follow one man without question, without regard for the truth, you’ve got a movement that’s actively undermining democracy. It’s not just political loyalty anymore. It’s a devotion that’s impervious to reason, and that makes it dangerous for everyone, especially for those of us who value critical thinking and dialogue.
In our discussion, we reflected on how difficult it is to reach people who have fallen into this mindset. It’s almost like you can’t reason with them because they’re not operating on a level where reason matters. Their entire identity is wrapped up in Trump—his grievances are their grievances, his enemies are their enemies. And that’s why this is more than just politics as usual. It’s a deeper psychological grip, one that makes me concerned for the future of the country.
So, yes, I called it a cult on the podcast, and I don’t take that lightly. Cults are about control, manipulation, and the destruction of individual thought. MAGA, for all its rhetoric about “freedom,” is exactly the opposite of liberation. It’s the antithesis of a free society where dissenting voices can be heard and respected. If we can’t see this for what it is, we’re in trouble.
If this movement continues to grow unchecked, we’re not just at risk of losing an election. We’re at risk of losing democracy itself. In less than two weeks, we will bear witness to our fate here in America.
