20. Shalimar (San Francisco) – They now have 6 locations in the Bay Area, but the original location opened in 1995 and was a pioneer in the Indo-Pakistani cuisine of the Bay Area. Although now they have a lot of competition from other “Desi” restaurants, many of which are very good and in some ways better than Shalimar, I still have to give my respect and props to the “OG” Pakistani restaurant which started it all in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco and is still going strong 25 years later. The menu is vast, but the favorites for me are the lamb chops, beef nihari, chicken tikka kababs and of course the naan! The original location on Jones street is small, so you usually have to wait for a table, but that’s part of the experience. Definitely a must try at least once in your life 🙂
