6 Key States and Numerous Local Elections Crucial for American Muslims 2016-10-27T16:31:32-04:00

Michigan:

The 2016 elections have been very intriguing thus far. The first two Presidential debates have caused quite the pandemonium, as Dem. Hillary Clinton and Rep. Donald Trump have gone to war with words. Between Trump telling voters to make sure to vote on November 28th and Clinton continuing to update her live fact check, it can be easy to lose sight of some of the local/state races, and/or ballot issues.

One ballot issue that Michigan’s American Muslim community should be aware of going is the proposal that will authorize the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA) to levy an assessment to support local transit. Why should the American Muslim communities keep an eye on this issue? An investment into local transit will not only support social justice but will also help impoverished families.

A transit system would allow for Detroit/Metro Detroit to become a globally competitive metropolis, which in turn would allow for our community to retain our young Muslim talent instead of losing them to other appealing communities. Furthermore, investing in local transit system can potentially improve the quality of life for new immigrants, the elderly and others in the community who are unable to operate a vehicle.

The voter registration deadline of October 11 has come and gone in Michigan. As we shift our attention to GOTV efforts, we must continue to ensure that the Muslim American community does not lose track of important local/state races, as well as important ballot issues that may have a significant impact on our community in the future. – Hassan Sheikh, EmergeUSA
