I was sitting in Starbucks and a group of high schoolers walked in a grabbed a table together.
Six of them crammed around a table built for two.
They began talking about the usual high school stuff. You know, sports, chicks, guys, how much they hate Mr. Thompson.
I zoned out, but eventually over heard, as the conversation went on, them talking about future jobs, colleges, and hopes in life.
In a moment of vulnerability. One of the guys said he wanted to be a teacher. Everyone laughed.
Hysterically.
The only problem was, this student was not laughing. He was serious.
This was a dream.
A hope.
A goal for him…
You see…
I’m tired of hearing people shoot down others dreams.
Laugh in the face of ones goals.
Possibly discourage one from pursuing the God given calling on their life.
This world is filled with discouraging people.
Haters.
So many of us out there, are in situations where you’re not pursuing your dream because of these haters. So many of you have encountered friends, family, co-workers, teachers, who laugh in the face of your dreams. And now because of these types of people discouraging you to pursue your dream. You’re not, you’ve hesitated, you’ve second guessed yourself…
I want to encourage you.
Do it.
Screw those who say you can’t. Screw those who say you’re not good enough. Screw those who say you’re not ready.
Who cares how audacious your goals are.
Who cares how unrealistic they might seem.
After this high schoolers friends stopped laughing, I LOVED, this kids response…
He smiled, and said,
“F*#k you guys! You’ll see who’s laughing in the end.”
(Okay not the nicest response… but nonetheless I wanted to interupt this conversation and in support of this kid, say, “YEAH! @#$% YOU GUYS! He’s gonna make this dream of his happen!”)
(Don’t worry I refrained, at the risk of never being able to come back to that Starbucks)
BUT, you know what? He took a stand for his goals, he took a stand for who he wanted to be. You see what he was actually saying within that was:
“I don’t care what you guys think, or what anyone thinks, I’m going to pursue this goal, and AIN’T NONE OF YOU GONNA STOP ME!…”
So, to all those who have haters in your ears… discouraging you away from your dreams:
Go for it! It’s a new year, and it’s time to make new goals, and new commitments or dig those old hairy audacious goals out of your journals, your diaries, DUST them off and write out your plan in making them go from dreams to realities….
What’s you’re dream? What are your goals? Have you ever experienced what this high schooler experienced?
More importantly, how can you be a voice of encouragement to someone in your life, in your family to pursue their goals, dreams, or possibly their God given calling?
