A Pedagogy of the Privileged

A Pedagogy of the Privileged 2018-05-11T14:30:48-05:00

You know why first-class exists (particularly being placed in the front of the plane)? It’s to remind others they’re not sitting in first-class. It’s for the same reasons first place is physically higher than second and third.

In the words of Seth Godin, “First class isn’t better because of the seats, it’s better because it’s not coach.”

Not to harp on pedagogy but, this is definitely a method of teaching society who or what is better. It’s toxic because it creates a culture of division (e.g. classism, racism, sexism, etc.). It’s not just saying “first is better…” it’s saying that sharing an experience somehow diminishes its value.

On the contrary, Jesus said, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first…”

It’s why children are starving when there is more than enough food for everybody.

It’s why single mothers have to work three jobs to barely make ends meet.

It’s why mass incarceration exists.

It’s why a glass ceiling was created.

You get the point. The list painfully drags on and on and on…

Contrary to popularized thought, life is better when lived out together. Food literally tastes better when shared at the same table. What’s the point of winning a gold medal when you’ve no one to celebrate the victory with?

Consider this… when you could save $10,000 to $50,000  by purchasing a used Toyota instead of that brand new Tesla, Mercedes, or BMW (all of which are depreciating wastes of money) know all of the people unnecessarily suffering today, right now… why wouldn’t you?

“It’s possible to create dignity and be successful at the same time…”
