I’m remember my senior year in high school we were at a pep rally all 3,500 of us piled into our tiny lunch box size of a gym. The captain of whatever team, walked to center court to pump us all up for that nights game against our schools rival, snatched the mic from the principals hand, holding on to the mic with one hand, and holding onto the front side of his pants with the other. Turned to all 3,500 of us and said…
“We’re Focused!”
That was it. That was his speech. Dropped the mic and strutted out of the gym with the rest of the team. I look back at this and immediately think, “What a douche bag.” ”Such a unique speech.”
But looking past him being a complete stereo type of a New Jersey high school senior… If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, its that: In order to make one’s goals a reality one has to stay focused. We’re so easily distracted. How could we not be? When everyone and everything seems to be grabbing at, and fighting for our attention.
Friends, family, jobs, salesmen, television, youtube, social media, to even this very blog.
We all want your attention, and your time. It’s no wonder that attention deficit disorder is the norm nowadays, its almost as if you’re the odd ball out if you don’t have ADD…
The down side is, we don’t have the time to give everyone and everything our attention.
The average American is said to spend 35 hours watching television per week!
35 hours! Thats 5 hours away from being a full time TV watcher. And the thing is there are NO BENEFITS that come along with that job title! (See what I did there?)
Even as I write this post, I’m being distracted by television, social media, and texts. (I’m watching House Hunters, texting four others, and downloading apps [Final Cut, woot woot!] while typing this)
Instead of suggesting a simple solution. I want you to do two things:
- Ask yourself, “What is my dream? What is my biggest goal?”
- Imagine, if you spent the same amount of time on going after your goal, as your did watching TV, what you could achieve…
It’s weird how hard it is to stay focused. How hard it is to keep your eyes set on the goal. To see something all the way to completion. Though it’s a simple concept, its definitely not an easy concept to put into action…
If one can stay focused, and manage to eliminate the distractions when necessary skies the limit.
What is it today that you need to stay focused on? What are some distractions you need to eliminate?
