Privilege is an oddity, though what’s more idiosyncratic is that society has taken arbitrary factors, such as the pigmentation of one’s skin, and used them as a means to rank or decide one’s overall value. The thing is, many of us who find ourselves to be in a position of privilege are not effected by these de facto’s, which is part of the reality that comes with being privileged, in other words privilege is blinding.
It’s true, you don’t know what you don’t know, but as people [let alone Christian’s] we have a responsibility to learn and therefore reject a willful ignorance. Though I am not white, and I am in fact a “Person of Color,” I am granted many privileges and opportunities in which other’s are not, with this privilege comes the ability to choose, to choose whether or not I will acknowledge my privilege, taking a posture of humility [as opposed to defense] and hope to grow, mature, and love.
In light of, not being white, today’s guest post will come from Jamie [the self-professed] “ignorant american,” she is white, and beautifully explains what “white privilege” is to those who don’t get it, [side note: this was originally posted on her tumblr].
