One date night, I was out with my husband, and we were talking about someone we knew who confessed to having a drinking problem and decided to go to an in-house rehab facility. We both couldn’t believe this person was even struggling with alcoholism. But, we were happy to hear that he decided to get help before things got worse. He lost his job and was on the brink of losing his family, but our friend was willing to do whatever it took to get clean and fight for his marriage.
As Dave and I were discussing this, I felt God pierce my heart. It was as if He was saying, “You better be careful, Ashley. Is your glass or two of wine at night really worth all that it may cost you?”. I needed to hear that and let it really sink in.
I had a moment of clarity, and right then and there, I decided that I would NOT be having my nightly glass or two of wine anymore. Here’s why:
- I don’t want to “need” any substance to get through the day or go to sleep.
There are certainly medical situations that warrant daily medications, but that’s not what I am talking about here. I am talking about the optional substances like caffeine, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, etc.. We don’t really NEED these, even though our body can become so dependent on them with frequent overuse and abuse. If we find ourselves needing that glass or two of wine to wind down or go to sleep every night, then we are in dangerous territory. We are in a compromising position where we have less and less control over the substance, and before long, it has control over us.
