3. Healing comes when we face the problem head-on and seek help.
When you ask an alcoholic why they drink too much, nine times out of ten they will tell you it’s so they won’t feel anything at all. It’s an escape from reality that only makes things worse. The longer we try to ignore whatever issue we are trying to escape in our life, the farther down the pit we go.
In her story, Vargas talks about the tremendous regret she has for missing so many precious moments with her children because she was too drunk or passed out somewhere. This breaks my heart, but this is the truth. Alcohol abuse takes away our ability to participate in life and makes us settle for a dull, numb existence. True healing happens when we rip off the bandaid and do what is necessary to be whole again. And, we must realize that we can’t do this alone. We need a strong support system around us (family, friends, clinicians, counselors, pastors, support groups, etc.), and we need to lean on the power of God. When we do this, we will find what we’ve been looking for all along–peace, love, and wholeness.
So, if you are having a glass of wine while you’re reading this blog, please don’t feel like I am pointing a finger at you. I promise that I’m not, Friend. Enjoy your glass of wine in peace. I would even join you for an occasional glass of wine.
But, I encourage ALL of us to ask ourselves one important question whenever we decide to have a drink–
“Am I having this glass of wine, or does this glass of wine have me?”
God will use your honest answer to help you know your own limits and adjust your daily habits accordingly, so that you can live the full life that He has for you.
Thanks so much for reading, sharing, and responding, Friends. I’d love to connect with you on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Also, if you or your family member are currently struggling with alcoholism or addiction, please get help immediately. Organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery are great places to find hope and help. Don’t wait. Tell a family member or friend that you are struggling and get the help that you need. It is my hope and prayer that you feel the freedom and power of Christ in your life and conquer your addiction. You can and will beat this. Don’t lose hope.
