I love how Colossians 3:13-14 describes love:
“Bear with each other and forgive any complaint you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues PUT ON LOVE, which is the bond of perfect unity.”
When I read those words, I picture the sun beaming into an older couple’s bedroom in the morning. Each of them slowly open their eyes and rise with a yawn and a stretch. Then, the husband and wife both reach to their respective bedside tables and grab a cozy sweater that lies there. They each carefully step out of bed and put on their cozy sweaters. Then, they walk towards the end of the bed where they come together to look into each other’s eyes with the kind of familiar smile and look of appreciation and love that only God, time, and commitment could have created. And, they join hands to face the day together.
They put on love like a cozy sweater that just gets softer the more it’s worn.
Folks, that’s what marriage is. It’s choosing to put on love every single day–even when we’re in a bad mood, or our spouse is annoying us, or he/she hurt our feelings that day, or we just don’t feel like it. We reach for that cozy sweater and we allow it to envelope our rough edges every single day.
We take ourselves out of the game and into our love story, hand in hand and heart to heart–unified. And, we get to watch what God can do when two people choose to put on love day after day after day. What an amazing experience THAT will be!
