The Slaughter of the Innocents

Long ago in Bethlehem
A massacre occurred
Children, slaughtered in the streets
Their tiny cries not heard.

When Herod runs the country
And arms it to the teeth
Then fear and paranoia reign
No peace does it bequeath.

Killing begets killing,
Desire to have revenge
More weapons can’t cure this cancer
Killing’s a contagious sin.

When children are the targets
And adults stand idly by,
The blood is on the hands of those
Who refuse to question why.

Jesus fled to Egypt
Avoiding Herod’s wrath
Where shall our children flee
To avoid more bloodbaths?

The children of Parkland
Marched to Capitol Dome
Where their elected officials,
DID NOTHING! SENT THEM HOME!

The right to life takes precedence
Over all other human rights
It’s time for our President
To do more than tweet soundbytes.

Unless we find it acceptable
To forfeit the next generation
It’s time for better gun control
Throughout our beloved nation.
