St. Louis summarizes the ancient Christian teachings about Mary in her relationship to each Person of the Blessed Holy Trinity.
God the Father gathered all the waters, and he named it the sea (Latin, mare). He gathered all his graces, and he called it Mary (Latin, Maria). This great God has a most rich treasury in which he’s laid up all that he has of beauty and splendor, of rarity and preciousness, including even his own Son. And this immense treasury is none other than Mary, whom the saints have named the Treasure of the Lord, out of whose abundant fullness all people are made rich.
God the Son has communicated to his mother all that he acquired by his life and his death, his infinite merits and his admirable virtues. And he’s made her treasurer of all that his Father gave him for his inheritance. It’s by her that he applies his merits to his members, and communicates his virtues, and distributes his graces. She’s his mysterious channel. She’s his aqueduct through which he makes his mercies flow gently and abundantly.
To Mary, his faithful spouse, God the Holy Spirit has communicated his unspeakable gifts. He’s chosen her to be the dispenser of all he possesses, in such a way that she distributes to whom she wills, as much as she wills, as she wills, all his gifts and graces. The Holy Spirit gives no heavenly gift to us that he doesn’t have pass through her virginal hands. Such has been the will of God, who’s willed that we should have everything through Mary. She who was impoverished and humble, and who hid herself even in the abyss of nothingness by her pro- found humility her whole life long, is now enriched and exalted and honored by the Most High. Such are the sentiments of the Church and the Holy Fathers. —St. Louis de Montfort, True Devotion to Mary
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
If Mary is the channel through which Christ’s gifts flow, have I expressed to her my confidence in her assistance? Have I acknowledged my gratitude for her role in our salvation?
CLOSING PRAYER
From a prayer of Blessed Raymond Jordano: Blessed Virgin Mary, it is you who teach true wisdom, you who obtain grace for sinners, for you are their advocate. It is you who promise glory to the one who honors you, for you are the treasurer of graces.
