Before we start looking at the four main views of eschatology (as there are many subdivisions, far too many to address for our brief purposes), and before we take a look at some of the differences between these primary views, it is vitally important that we are all on the same page as far as knowing what beliefs all Christian views on eschatology hold in common in order to be considered orthodox. Of course there are areas in eschatology that Christians will continue to debate until Christ returns. However, there are some beliefs that must be adhered to if one is truly to be labeled Christian Read more

Many people don't want to be bothered with issues pertaining to eschatology (the study of the last days or end times). Often times when people are asked what their view is on the end times they will quip that they are pan-millennial, "everything will 'pan' out in the end." Although that may be technically true, there are many reasons in which we need to take the study of eschatology seriously. Some of those reasons follow. Read more

In 1961, a professor at Yale named Stanley Milgram conducted a now-famous series of experiments to test the power of authority in people's lives.  These ‘obedience experiments’ form the core drama of the creative 2015 biopic, Experimenter.  The test involved two subjects, who were told they were part of an experiment and given the roles of ‘Teacher’ and ‘Learner.’  The Teacher was given a series of test questions to read to the learner in the next room and if the Learner got a question wrong, the Teacher was to give him an electric shock.  The shocks began with a small, but still testy, 25 volts and went all the way up, incrementally, to 450 volts.  Milgram wanted to see if anyone would continue to give shocks all the way to the end if told to do so by an authority figure. Read more

One cannot hate the brethren (read: the church) and love God. Thus, the problematic implication, even if Andy Stanley didn't mean it like this, is that parents of little ones in the small church are raising children who will hate God because they are not within the big church. Read more

The great lie of the devil, folks, is to get believers to point fingers at each other, all the while ignoring the true enemy, who silently creeps into the church and destroys it from within. Another equally powerfully lie is to be afraid to rebuke, correct, or discipline any believer outside of ourselves. You believe in the bible, don’t you? Then you’d be good to remember that it’s not only to be used for “teaching” but also (2 Timothy 3 says) “for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (we tend to forget those ones).  Read more

The series New Studies in Biblical Theology is a fine series overseen by pastor-scholar D.A. Carson, attempting to understand individual books in the Bible on their own terms and in context with the rest of the biblical canon. Barry Webb’s contribution, Five Festal Garments, is an excellent volume in the series. The book digs deeply into 5 somewhat unrelated books, Songs of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, the only unifying threads being that the books rarely mention God, that they are all related to Jewish festivals, and that most Christians don't really know what to do with these books, in terms of thoughtful application to their own lives, and how they fit into the bigger story of Scripture. Read more
