2. WALL-E (ages 4+)
One of the many great things about “WALL-E” is that it’s a movie that’s easy to enjoy at any age. Adults love the way Pixar incorporates deep themes, but kids can enjoy the physical comedy on display in the film’s nearly wordless opening hour. “WALL-E” is peak Pixar, finding the studio at the height of its technical prowess and storytelling mastery. It’s a very simple romance on some levels, but there’s also the deeper theme of our stewardship of the planet and our addiction to luxury and ease. This is a film that tells its audience that our actions matter and have consequences; not just for ourselves, but for our entire planet. And the whole “baby humans” thing might be above some kids’ heads, but maybe it’s good for them to start thinking about the way our dependence on screens is infantilizing us and that hard work can be truly joyful and life-giving.
