4. To Kill a Mockingbird (ages 8+)
This is a movie I intend to watch with my kids once they’re old enough, but it’s one a lot of adults would be good to revisit every few years as well. We like to think we’re beyond the conflicts of this film, but just flipping on the TV lately shows just how divided we still are racially. Maybe we talk about race in more nuanced terms than the characters of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” but the conflict still comes from the same prejudices and fears. Kids need to see how ugly adults can be so that they know not to act that way. And they need to be inspired by characters like Atticus Finch to take a stand even if its unpopular. And parents? We need to revisit Atticus Finch to set the bar for ourselves and see that we’re modeling integrity for our children.
