Top 7 Bible Verses About Abortion and Sanctity of Life July 15, 2015

In the last decade, it seems as if two societal issues have been on the minds of the people inside and outside of churches across the nation. Many Sundays, church congregants will hear their Pastor get behind the pulpit and speak about some current event regarding homosexuality or abortion. This is with cause, of course; those two issues have been increasing more and more over the last handful of years. Both of these issues, though, seem to be here to stay. So, instead of Christians lamenting the Supreme Court decisions that have been made in the past (or even the present) the best thing we can do is lean what the Scriptures have to say about them and then preach the Gospel as best we can to those on the outside. We must be armed with truth, and to help with that I want to provide a little bit of direction. Here are the top 7 Bible verses about abortion and sanctity of life.

Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” ESV

Bible Verses About Abortion

The Scriptures proclaim time and time again that children are a gift from God; with that in mind, it would be despising that gift by aborting it.

Psalm 139:13-16 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” ESV

This is a very popular verse people bring up in regards to abortion. If God is the one who forms every individual, even in the womb, then no one should have the right to destroy it.

Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” NKJV

Man is made in God’s image—which certainly includes every child in the womb.

Psalm 22:10 “From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God” NIV

There are so many verses that suggest value and personhood while being in the womb.

Exodus 20:13 “ You shall not murder” NIV

Although this verse isn’t explicitly about abortion, it could be depending on your side of the issue. For pro-lifers, abortion is equated to murder because they believe the fetus is an actual person and that by aborting it, they are committing murder.

Proverbs 24:11-12 “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, “Surely we did not know this,” does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?” NKJV

Although Christians do not need to be judgmental or harsh towards those considering an abortion, they should definitely stand up for what they believe is right—in a loving way!

Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” NKJV

This verse, along with others, show how there is humanity before a physical birth—which is definitely important for the pro-life community! Much of their arguments rely on showing how the fetus is more than just a fetus—it’s an actual human being who God loves and created, just like everyone else.

Conclusion

Abortion and Sanctity of Life is such a touchy subject because of how many emotions can be at play. Yes, Christians need to stand up for those who cannot (the ones in the womb), but at the same time they need to do it with grace and love—not with fire and brimstone. I’ve heard of women considering abortion have a change of heart because of some Christians willing to come alongside her, pray with her, and even help during the pregnancy (and afterwards!), but seldom have I heard about a woman changing her mind by reading signs with Bible verses shoved in her face (or even the worse ones with “murderer” written on them.)
