Top 7 Bible Verses About Isaac May 18, 2016

Here are seven important Bible verses about Isaac, Abraham’s son.

Genesis 26:12-13 “And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.”

Since God had blessed Isaac with so much, as “He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants…the Philistines envied him” (Gen 26:14). They were breaking the tenth commandment by coveting what Isaac had but Isaac only had what he had because of God’s blessing upon Him through the promises of Abraham, his father. Clearly, Isaac was living in obedience; otherwise God would have never blessed him so abundantly. Owning great possessions is not sin; it’s sin when they own you.

Genesis 22:9-10 “When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.”

Just as the knife was being hurled downward, the angel of the Lord said “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me” (Gen 22:12), and “because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice” (Gen 22:16-18).

Galatians 4:28 “Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.”

The Apostle Paul knew all about the patriarchs and referred to them as often as did the author of Hebrews, specifically chapter 11. In Genesis 26:24 it says, “And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake.” What a reassuring word from God that no matter how hard it gets or impossible it looks, God will be with him and bless him on account of God’s servant, Abraham.

Behold-the-fire-and-the (1)

Genesis 25:12 “And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.”

Seeing the desperate nature of Isaac’s prayer, and certainly on behalf of his wife, Rebekah, God heard and answered his prayer and the line of Abraham through his son of promise came to fruition. He called his name Jacob and through Jacob the twelve tribes of Israel would come and the Lion of the Tribe of Judah would be born centuries later as a Man, but as the preexisting God as the Word, Who was both God and was with God (John 1:1-2). Jesus Christ came to dwell in the flesh (John 1:14), to save the same.

Hebrews 11:20 “By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.”

When Isaac blessed his sons, Jacob and Esau, he remembered the promises that God had given to Abraham, and those promises were to be passed on to him, and now to his sons, however the greatest of these promises would be upon Jacob, through whom would come a descendant Who would be the Messiah, the Son of David, Jesus Christ. Isaac, just like his father Abraham, was saved by faith because he believed God and God accounted that belief to him as righteousness. You can expect to see Isaac in the kingdom.

Genesis 22:7-8 “And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.”

This line points to the cross thousands of years later. God would provide an offering for Himself through Jesus Christ and His sinless God-Man of Perfection, the unspotted and without blemish Lamb of God. This is just what the Apostle Peter wrote about in 1st Peter 1 that their conduct should be holy (1st Pet 1:15-16), “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1st Pet 1:18-19). Christianity is the only religion where God demands a sacrifice but supplies the sacrifice, which is Himself in Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

Genesis 24:67 “Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”

Just like we would seek comfort after our mother’s death, so Isaac sought comfort has his mother died. This happened just after “the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done” (Gen 24:66), so we can imagine that Isaac already loved Rebekah by then. It’s also obvious that Rebekah was a very compassionate woman, helping Isaac through his grief, so it’s not surprising that Isaac “was comforted after his mother’s death” by a woman he loved deeply.

Conclusion

Isaac, the son of Abraham, has an interesting name in the Hebrew, “Yitschaq,” which mean “he laughs,” and probably relates to when Sarah received the news that she’d give birth to a son at age 90 and then laughed, likely from disbelief; maybe even from shock, but she is still listed in the “hall of faith” in Hebrews 11, just as Isaac is, where the author of Hebrews writes that is was by “faith [Abraham] went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God” (Heb 11:9-10). That’s the city I look forward to going to and speaking with all these patriarchs about their experiences, but first and foremost, I am falling at the feet of Jesus Christ Who is King of kings and Lord of lords.
