What is Nibiru? What does this word mean and how should Christians react to it?
What is Nibiru?
Nibiru simply refers to the Nibiru cataclysm which is a supposed encounter with a large planetary body or object that approaches or strikes the earth, possibly ending all of life or at least life as we know it today. Nibiru is sometimes referred to as Planet X because we don’t have a precise or specific object or celestial body in mind. It has even been referred to as the 12th planet which is theoretically believed to be another planet that we don’t know about and since it takes 3,600 years for such an outer object to rotate around the sun once, we may not even have seen it. The word “Nibiru” means “planet of the crossing” so what does this have to do with Christianity and why should we even be concerned about it since we can do nothing to prevent such a collision from occurring?
The Anunnak
Zecheria Sitchin claims to have discovered evidence of artifacts including stone tablet pictures that depict visits by advanced alien settlers, called Anunnak, although these have never been confirmed by scientists. His belief is that these extra-terrestrial guests (the Anunnak) genetically engineered the human species and used them as slaves in their gold mines; however it doesn’t answer the question, Where did the Anunnak come from? If they’re so advanced why would they need human slave-labor? Where did the Anunnak originate and how did their life arise? We can see an infinite regression that one advanced civilization begat another and another but where were the first original “aliens” from and where or from whom did they receive life?
What is the Risk?
Some believe the Nibiru is connected to a Sumerian myth and there are thousands who embrace Sitchin’s claims and are still anxiously awaiting the return of the planet Nibiru and although it was predicted for December 21st, 2012, the coinciding of the supposed Mayan Calendar’s prediction of the end of the earth. They believe that because the earth, sun and center of the Milky Way galaxy would align on December 21st, 2012, and this would cause a dramatic orbital interruption on earth’s neighboring planets and would have catastrophic consequences for life on earth, but the day came and went, and like so many other prophecies of mankind, it flopped. What Sitchin’s followers and Sitchin himself claims has never shown the existence of this planet and its inhabitants, the Anunnaki. None of this is supported by even one shred of scientific evidence. This idea was not new to Sitchin as Nancy Lieder was the first (that we know of) to publish her beliefs and displayed on her website, ZetaTalk. This woman claims (with no proof) that she was chosen to relay this urgent message to mankind as a young girl and she said she was the designated “contactee” for the human race.
Human Philosophies
Back to Nancy Lieder and the fallacy of the Nibiru theory. This woman’s false belief caused her to make a public announcement through her website, but also, roughly a week before the supposed arrival of Planet X in May 2003, Lieder appeared on KROQ-FM radio in Los Angeles. She gave her listeners advice to have their pets euthanized in anticipation of the event, as and tragically, many did! How sad that sheer speculation would cause so many people to put their pets to death on something that has never been proven! How far these human philosophies and predictions can lead us astray!
Is the Nibiru the Wormwood Source?
Some believe that the Book of Revelation mentions this event where the Apostle John wrote, “The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water” (Rev 8:10-11), but does this actually refer to the Nibiru cataclysm. Some Bible scholars believe this may be a meteorite or other large object that crashes into the earth’s atmosphere, and although most of it burns it, there is still enough left to bring mass destruction to the earth and even poison the waters, which is what wormwood means. Wormwood simply means “bitter” from the plant that it originates from; however there is no evidence that the Nibiru and wormwood is the same thing.
Conclusion
When people look outside of the Bible for meaning and understanding, they are foolishly standing on human thought and imaginations and that leads only to destruction because the Bible says “the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness” (1st Cor 3:19), much like what Job said in Job 5:13, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.” The Apostle Paul warned, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (Col 2:8). The truth is, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1st Cor 1:25) and I would include women such as Nancy Lieder.
