In the last post I put some quotes on Paul and Scripture (See HERE) The answer: Brevard S. Childs in his new The Church’s Guide for Reading Paul (Eerdmans).  Most people guessed Richard Hays which is to be expected.  Some guessed NT Wright.  Several people did get Childs right and bravo to them. I will post a review of Childs’ book when I finish it (another couple of weeks). Read more

Guess who wrote these words: For Paul, his rendering of Scripture is not an intentional distortion , but a truthful application when judged by its faithful apprehension of its subject matter, namely, the manifestation of God in Jesus Christ. …Paul’s intertextual, christological reading is not a misreading, but a truthful witness to the Old Testament when read in the context of the dramatic transformation of reality achieved by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I just came across a forthcoming book (Sept 2009) by Peter Oakes called Reading Romans in Pompeii: Paul’s Letter at Ground Level (Fortress). Here is the description: Peter Oakes relies on demographic information and data from excavations in nearby Pompeii to paint a compelling portrait of daily life in a typical insula, or apartment complex, like the ones in which Paul’s audience in Rome likely lived. Imaginatively fleshing out profiles of the circumstances of actual residents of Pompeii, Oakes then... Read more

Philippians and Philemon (New Testament Library) by Charles Cousar. Though this commentary series does not really have a good niche in the commentary market, they have contracted some great scholars (forthcoming – Gaventa on Romans; Joel Green on James; Stephen Fowl on Ephesians). Cousar will offer an excellent ‘theological’ reading here. His work on the cross is seminal. I don’t know much about this commentary except the description hints that Cousar plays up the problem of opponents. Pauline Parallels (Walter... Read more

It is, of course, a great privilege to have a Feschrift written for you.  It is exceptional to have two written for you.  But three?  Truly James Dunn is greatly admired! The first, The Holy Spirit and Christian Origins (Eerdmans, 2004; eds. Stanton et al.), was written by expert scholars on topics mostly in the area of Paul and the Spirit.  I would say that this is one of the best Feschriften I have ever seen in terms of critically-engaging... Read more

The British New Testament Conference is one of the most enjoyable parts of coming to the UK to study New Testament.  The conference normally occurs in September for a couple of days and about 100-150 scholars and students gather to reflect, explore, and, of course, argue.  In 2008 the conference was right here in Durham.  The 2009 meeting (3-5 Sept.) will take place in Aberdeen.  Several of the study groups have sent out calls for papers. The plenary speakers have... Read more

I have finally finished reading Tom Wright’s new Justification: God’s Plan and Paul’s Vision (SPCK, 2009).  I dare not attempt the very detailed and insightful mutiple-post review that Ken has so admirably accomplished.  Rather, I wish to just offer some ‘reflections’ on my understanding and appreciation for what the good bishop has said. (DISCLAIMER: One of the reasons I chose to study at Durham was so that I might just be that much closer to him, to let something seep... Read more
