Blog Series: In Their Own Words. Here authors of new books offer a snippet of their research converted to a blog form. Julien C.H. Smith is author of Paul and the Good Life: Transformation and Citizenship in the Commonwealth of God. Salvation and the Good Life: Putting the Pieces Back Together What does it look like to be saved? We might liken it to being rescued from life-threatening peril, as in pulling a drowning child from a river. But we could also... Read more

  J. Todd Billings, Gordon H. Girod Research Professor of Reformed Theology, Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI Why do you love teaching and researching about Christian theology? I find teaching and researching theology to be a joyful act of worship. I’m constantly astonished by how scripture and the wide and deep Christian tradition is so much more peculiar, compelling, and wondrous than anything I could have come up with on my own! Indeed, the God who meets us through scripture,... Read more

Julie Canlis, adjunct, Whitworth University Graduate Studies in Theology   Why do you love teaching and researching about Christian theology? Because I love the church! My “normal” job is with our local church, where I have the privilege of leading worship and being the “liturgical director” (which basically translates into explaining the liturgy and helping our congregation enter into its breadth and depth). I find that the best litmus test for my theological hunches is whether or not they somehow... Read more

Mike Winger, “The Bible Thinker,” asked me to give my academic opinion of The Passion Translation produced by Brian Simmons. Bottom line: It is a very sloppy, inaccurate, and unreliable “translation” of the Bible. Don’t use it for worship, Bible study, or preaching. Many people have found it “refreshing” because of its language and style, but you need to know that Simmons’ sources and methods are haphazard and misleading. If Simmons was one of my Greek students, he would not... Read more

Norman Wirzba – Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Theology, Duke University   Why do you love teaching and researching about Christian theology? Teaching and researching about the big questions—where are we? who are we? what should we do?—is both exciting and vital to living a decent and intentional life. Working with students and colleagues makes the journey instructive, difficult, and beautiful at the same time. What is one “big idea” in your scholarship? Creaturely lives and places are the... Read more

Oliver Crisp, Professor of Analytic Theology and Director of the Logos Institute, School of Divinity, University of St Andrews Why do you love teaching and researching about Christian theology? I have always been drawn to the big existential questions in life. Why is there something rather than nothing? Where did the world come from? Is there any meaning to life? Is there life after death? Is there a god? Christian theology addresses the big questions. I didn’t know about philosophy... Read more

Kristen Deede Johnson, Professor of Theology and Christian Formation, Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Western Theological Seminary Why do you love teaching and researching about Christian theology?  Discovering the beauty of Trinitarian theology while pursuing my PhD transformed my own faith.
