I have a confession to make. I never read an A-J Levine book until last week. (But I do own and have used the Jewish Annotated New Testament, which is excellent btw.) But I have been wanting to read Levine’s work and since I am teaching a course on the Gospels in the spring, I thought I would pick up her new book Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven (Abingdon Press). This is not a... Read more

Teaching is Formation I have been “off the grid” for a while as I have been teaching a week-long face-to-face intensive in Chicago for Northern Seminary. So, right now I am in the airport, processing the exciting week of learning, conversation, and community that just ended. I am in my twelfth year of full-time teaching, mostly at the seminary level. I have learned a lot in that time. Unfortunately most of the profs that taught me in seminary did not... Read more

NT Wright and Michael Bird recently released a “New Testament in Its World” Podcast with five episodes. Each one features conversations on New Testament and scholarship with Bird and Wright. In addition, each episode has a special guest: Craig Keener, Lynn Cohick, Jeannine Brown, Esau McCaulley, and myself. Topics are wide-ranging with lots of anecdotes and off-the-cuff chatter, but some good historical and exegetical conversations as well. Check it out HERE. Read more

Here are my top picks for new books releasing in August and September. Enjoy! August 2020 Amy-Jill Levine, Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven (Abingdon Press)  Book Description: The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7, contains some of Jesus most profound and most memorable teachings. What might these teachings have mean to his disciples, and to the others who first heard them? How do they enhance our reading of the rest of the Gospel of... Read more

Jonathan and I go back a long time. We were fellow seminary students. He was known to be a fastidious student, pursuing his courses with passion and excellence. And he brings those same qualities to his work as editor at Hendrickson. True story: I worked at Hendrickson in sales and marketing before I did my PhD. Hendrickson does good work, especially with reference resources. Jonathan is well-suited to produce high-quality reference materials in biblical studies. Enjoy this “excellent” interview!  Tell... Read more

I have known Chris Spinks for many years. We share a love for the Pacific Northwest and for Portland soccer. Chris knew me when I was just out of my PhD, and he took a chance on my first book, Prepare, Succeed, Advance (2011). I had never written a book for a wider readership and Chris was helpful and gracious. Since then, we have worked on a bunch of stuff together, including the second edition of Prepare, Succeed, Advance (2019).... Read more

I love browsing the Baylor University Press exhibit at SBL. They produce beautiful books of the highest academic quality. So, how do books go from ideas in the heads of scholars to the finished product at the bookstore? Sit back, have a cup of coffee (or something ice-cold), and learn about the academic publishing world from Cade Jarrell, managing editor at Baylor University Press.   Tell us about yourself and your background. Thanks for the opportunity, Nijay. This is a... Read more
