Mitt Romney has been much talked about as a potential Secretary of State in the impending Trump administration.  (They had dinner together this evening.)   But there are others who are apparently also being considered.  One of them is former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.  He was an excellent mayor, and behaved downright heroically on 9-11.  Moreover, he was a fiercely partisan supporter of Mr. Trump’s presidential candidacy.  But his qualifications for being named America’s top diplomat are,... Read more

More advanced telescopes are allowing us to detect dim galaxies that we couldn’t see even just a few years ago.  Hundreds if not thousands of them:   https://www.sciencenews.org/article/star-starved-galaxies-fill-cosmos?tgt=nr     Read more

On his superb blog, the wonderful Robert Boylan calls attention to a speech that I gave at the 2004 FAIR conference — the organization is now called FairMormon, of course — and that, honestly, I had completely forgotten:   http://scripturalmormonism.blogspot.com/2016/11/autobiographical-notes-of-my-testimony.html   Some might find it interesting.  And my most determined critics will, no doubt, be able to find several items in it that reveal my depraved character.     Read more

Four things belong to a judge: to hear courteously, to answer wisely, to consider soberly, and to decide impartially. Socrates   All of us must (and do) make judgments, and it seems to me that these “four things” pertain, therefore, to all of us in that sense.  Including online.     Read more

A few weeks ago, my wife and I watched a Norwegian disaster film called Bølgen (or, in English, The Wave).  It was surprisingly good (e.g., frightening).  And the disaster that it portrays is appallingly realistic, even probable.     The film was particularly striking to us because we were there, in Geiranger Fjord — which is the very place where the plot is set — at the end of August.  It’s a dramatically beautiful place, although this movie makes me wonder... Read more

As some of you may have noticed, I wasn’t a particularly enthusiastic supporter of Mr. Donald J. Trump for the presidency.   When people ask me about my feelings regarding the 2016 election, I respond that I’m happy that Hillary Clinton lost but sad that Donald Trump won.  I hope that he turns out to be a better president than anything in his past has led me to expect.   It’s possible.  Sometimes, people rise to their responsibilities.... Read more

I’ve just stumbled across what looks to be a very interesting blog devoted to the subject of “Mormons and Science”:   http://www.mormonsandscience.com   This is a topic that has always interested me.  For some reason, it’s been especially on my mind over the past week and a half.    (Such phases recur with me.)   Personally, I’m a young-earth creationist who hates and fears science and who regards scientists as wicked.  That’s what I’ve been told, anyway, by... Read more
