When a Republican congressman walked by an offensive painting depicting police officers as pigs hanging in the U.S. Capitol of all places, he did what he should have: took it down himself.

California Rep. Duncan Hunter unscrewed the reprehensible “art” and then delivered it to the office of Democrat Rep. Lacy Clay from Missouri. Clay is responsible for hanging the painting after it won a congressional student art competition in St. Louis that he hosted. It had been hanging in the hallway of the building since June.

The painting was made in response to the Ferguson riots. The “pigs” are aiming guns at black protesters who are holding signs like “racism kills.” One black man is wearing a graduation cap and is being crucified, perhaps a nod to one of the pictures of Michael Brown the media distributed after his shooting wearing his cap and gown.

Hunter said Clay is a “great guy” but added, “you’ve got to respect our men in uniform and what they do.”

“Lacy can put it back up, I guess, if he wants to,” Hunter added. “But I’m allowed to take it down.”

The painting was previously the target of law enforcement professionals. At least 27,000 officers spoke out against the artwork done by a high school student in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, but he didn’t have the guts to do anything about it.

Duncan Hunter did and performed an act of courage not usually seen by a member of the GOP. Good for him.

Looks good now, doesn’t it?
