“How can this be?”: a homily for The Annunciation 2015-03-13T16:31:36-04:00

From the vault, hereโ€™s part of a homily from Advent in 2008, with some thoughts on the feast we celebrate on March 25:

+++

How many of us have been blindsided by events we never expected โ€“ a twist onย  lifeโ€™s path that we never saw coming, for better or for worse โ€” and askedย  ourselves, in fury or despair or bewilderment:

How can this be?

And here Mary is told, simply:

โ€œNothing is impossible with God.โ€

And that is enough.

That is all she needs to hear.ย  She will accept Godโ€™s will and she willย  carry it out.

Itโ€™s โ€“ in every sense โ€“ extraordinary.ย  How is it that someone so young canย  so easily say โ€œYesโ€ to what will undoubtedly be difficult, and painful, andย  maybe even scandalous? The very idea of it is a shock.ย  It goes against ourย  culture.

We live in an age when itโ€™s so easy to say โ€œNo.โ€ We can make life what weย  want it to be โ€“ even if thatโ€™s not what itย shouldย be.

You can fight aging with botox, avoid dieting with liposuction.ย  You canย  make a baby in a Petri dish. You can get a mortgage for an overpriced house withย  a three-car garage that you canโ€™t afford.ย ย ย  And, if it all becomes tooย  stressful, society tells us that you can get rid of anything thatโ€™s justย  inconvenient โ€“ even an unborn child.

But Mary didnโ€™t.ย  Mary wouldnโ€™t.ย ย  She listened to another voice.ย  The voiceย  of an angel.ย  When Mary asked the question the world asks so often of God โ€“ โ€œHowย  can this be? โ€œโ€” the answer ignited in her a fire.ย  The fire of the Holy Spirit,ย  the fire of possibility.

The answer is this: it can be because God wills it to be.ย  Nothing isย  impossible with God.

How often we forget that.ย  How often we disbelieve it, or mistrust it.

But the lesson of The Annunciation is so clear.

Mary, weโ€™re told, was troubled at what she heard.ย  But whatย  follows is a message for all of us.ย  In our moments of confusion, when we areย  troubled by what God brings to usโ€ฆnothing is impossible.

Angels will speak.ย  The Spirit will come.ย  A light will break through theย  skies and guide the world to a savior in a stable.

How can this be?

It canโ€ฆbecause nothing is impossible with God.

โ€ฆMary is challenged.ย  And so are we.ย  Theย  gospel asks us to look deeply at the unexpected, and the miraculous, and theย  mysterious.

It asks us to consider possibility.ย  And it asks us to look into our ownย  hearts.

How do we respond to the Gabriels in our own lives?

How do we react when God suddenly knocks on our door to announce a change inย  plans?

When the doctor callsโ€ฆ

When the market failsโ€ฆ

When a child becomes illโ€ฆor a parent is bedriddenโ€ฆor the pregnancy resultsย  arenโ€™t what you thought theyโ€™d beโ€ฆor wanted them to be.

We may find ourselves brought up short by life.ย  We may feel disappointment,ย  confusion, maybe even anger.ย  And we may ask those words that Mary asked so longย  ago, โ€œHow can this be?โ€

How will I get through it?ย  How will I manage?

The answer is the same today as it was 2,000 years ago.

And that is what we cling to.

It is possible.

Because nothing is impossible with God.

I just love how Gabriel is wearing a dalmatic.
