Originally posted  July 2008. He’s been mentioned on the list of Mitt Romney’s possible running mates. And now Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal is getting closer scrutiny from the media. The Wall Street Journal  looked at his remarkable faith journey:  In 1988, 16-year-old Piyush Jindal totaled his father’s new car a few weeks before graduating from Baton Rouge High School. Piyush — who then and now prefers the nickname “Bobby” he adopted from “The Brady Brunch” sitcom — had to assess... Read more

[Note: The Deacon’s Wife and I are headed out on vacation Saturday morning, to someplace warm and sunny with lots of water.  I’m not bringing my laptop, and hope to spend as little time as possible in front of a keyboard and computer screen.  But I’m leaving behind a few postings for those who may drop by from time to time.  Most are items from the last few years that people seemed to like.  Below is the first entry.  It’s... Read more

The Diocese of Brooklyn’s deacon ordination class of 2007 finally got around to holding a five-year reunion Friday night. While a lot of guys couldn’t make it, those who did had a great time, enjoying a night of prayer, fellowship, great conversation….and cake! A grateful diaconal bow to Deacon Anthony Favale and his generous pastor, Fr. Michael Gelfant, of St. Finbar’s in Brooklyn for hosting this wonderful night. Read more

This is too good not to share. In anticipation of her 9th birthday, Rachel Beckwith informed her mom that she didn’t want  presents; instead, she asked friends and family to donate $9 to charity: water, so that kids her age in Africa would have clean water to drink. She fell shy of her goal of $300, which is enough to give 15 people clean drinking water. But she pledged to do better when her 10th birthday rolled around. Tragically, Rachel was killed in a car accident... Read more

Details from Whispers:  Depending on how one looks at things, this Friday morning brings either the most courageously bold — or stunningly brazen — American appointment in the seven-year reign of Pope Benedict XVI. For the better part of the last four months, the machinery of the archdiocese that — at least, under normal circumstances — many US bishops consider the nation’s most daunting assignment has quietly prepared its 450,000 members for a transition at the top. Yet while the pontiff’s selection of the... Read more

Details:  Prayer is on the move in South Florida. First, the Archdiocese of Miami began streaming catechism through an app. Now it’s about to hold weekly Mass at the airport. Religion-to-go is all about accommodating the faithful wherever they are. And where they often are is the airport. Starting 7 p.m. Aug. 18 and every Saturday after that, the archdiocese will have a Mass on the fourth level of Terminal D at Miami International. Airport spokesman Greg Chin said it’s... Read more

They really should have thought twice about some of these. From Huffington Post:  Before you plunk down a pretty penny to register a new domain name, please think twice about what you choose. These 21 websites didn’t. Or perhaps they thought the double entendres their names created when strung together as URLs were just too funny to be passed up. Choosespain.com? That can be read as either “choose Spain” or, um, “chooses pain.” Whorepresents.com unfortunately is often mistaken for “whore presents.” And... Read more

Details from Catholic News Agency: Catholics in England have created an Olympic Cross to help reach out to Olympians and attendees of the 2012 Olympic Games. “We wanted to create a keepsake that symbolizes everything the games truly represent, something we could then pass on to future Olympic host nations,” explained James Parker, Catholic Executive Coordinator for the 2012 Games. “As Christians our lives mean nothing without the Cross and so this seemed to be the most suitable object to... Read more
