It’s always good when Christian totalitarians just come right out and tell us what they really want. We’ve always known that David Barton was a theocrat, but in a recent interview he came right out and said it, arguing that the law should make sure that every single aspect of life is line with (his own bizarre interpretation of) the Bible.

I’d never heard of Bethany Blankley before, but she’s “a conservative political analyst and columnist who regularly appears on Fox News Radio.” She has a new article at the Christian Post that makes arguments so stupid that David Barton himself might find them embarrassing (though she borrows a lot from him). Like this take on the Ten Commandments, which is hilarious:

Last Wednesday I debated Dr. Tim Schmig on the question of whether the constitution was based upon Biblical principles for CFI Michigan. The turnout was amazing, the 4th largest crowd we’ve ever had, and the debate went pretty much exactly as I expected. The debate was civil and amiable — Tim was nothing but a gracious gentleman over the last few months as we’ve planned this — but I think any objective observer would conclude that I got the best of him in this debate.

Despite having already been withdrawn, those Houston subpoenas are now being portrayed by the Christian right as pretty much the only thing going on in the world, the key to understanding everything imaginable. Lutheran pastor Laurence White went on David Barton’s radio show and offered this amusing bit of hyperbolic bullshit:

The Christian right is always telling us that if we don’t vote the right way and don’t do the right things, the bully they worship is going to kick our asses something fierce. Or if they want to put a positive spin on it, he won’t “bless” the country if we don’t do what they tell us to do. David Barton is the latest:

In what may be the most ridiculous religious argument ever, the Chinese government is demanding that the Dalai Lama reincarnate when he dies. The Dalai Lama — good golfer, the Lama, but not a good tipper — has said that he will not do so as long as China continues to occupy Tibet.

If there is one refrain we hear constantly from the Christian right these days, it’s the claim that if we don’t adopt the policies they prefer, their big bad buddy is going to beat us all up. Here’s David Barton trotting out this moronic idea on his radio show for the 15 millionth time:

We’re used to some seriously daffy claims from David Barton and his radio co-host Rick Green, but the one they launched into on their show on Monday is particularly baffling. They seem to think that Obama and Kerry won’t fight against the terrorists (you know, the ones they’re bombing the shit out of right now) because they support reproductive rights.

Eddie Hyatt, the author of this profoundly silly article in Charisma News that echoes most of David Barton’s more absurd claims, calls himself a historian. Like Barton, however, he has no credentials at all in the field (his degrees are in divinity, from Regent University, and “Pentecostal-Charismatic Studies” from Oral Roberts University). Let the ridiculous claims begin:

Alex Songe pointed me to this interview with Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the screenwriters for the movie God’s Not Dead. It might surprise you, as it did me, that they are both Catholic, not evangelical Protestant. I’m sure it won’t surprise you that they’re nursing a serious persecution complex.

Glenn Beck recently claimed that his good friend, fake historian David Barton, had been invited to give his usual lecture full of lies to politicians in a former Soviet republic. Now Barton has revealed that it was in the Ukraine, where he told them how to base their entire country on the Bible.

David Barton says that God is going to punish America for not slavishly praising anything the state of Israel does, no matter how destructive or wrong it might be by sending natural disasters that are bound to take place anyway. At the same time, of course, Muslim reactionaries will say that Allah is punishing America for supporting Israel. Both are totally and completely full of shit, of course.
