Bryan Fischer, the uber-wingnut spokesman for the American Family Association, is quite upset by Ann Coulter and Glenn Beck not being sufficiently bigoted against gays. Coulter accepted a speaking engagement for a gay Republican group, while Beck said he really doesn’t care about stopping same-sex marriage.

And Fischer, who wants the government to force gays and lesbians into “reparative therapy” or prison, is doing his usual dishonest framing and revealing his obsession with gay sex:

As I noted in a comment yesterday, the one big example of Sharia law allegedly coming to the United States that all the wingnuts talk about — the case in New Jersey where a state judge refused to grant a PPO for an abusive Muslim husband because his religion gave him the right to beat his wife — has been overturned by the appeals court. There are a couple of important things to note here.

First, this really had nothing to do with Sharia law. The judge did not attempt to apply any such law. It was a very narrow finding on the question of intent, with the judge concluding that because the husband had the expectation that it was okay to beat his wife and force her to have sex, he lacked any specific criminal intent. That’s a horrible, horrible ruling — but it isn’t an application of Sharia law.

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association seems to be staking his claim to being the most ridiculous voice of the religious right — and imagine the competition for that title! In his latest missive, he blames a grizzly bear attack at Yellowstone National Park on America for turning their back on God. He begins by quoting a rather ridiculous bit of scripture:

History reveals that God’s covenant with an ancient nation suggests that one of the consequences for a nation which walks in his statues is that it will have nothing to fear from wild animals. “If you walk in my statutes…I will remove harmful beasts from the land” (Lev. 26:3,6).

On the other hand, “[I]f you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments…I will let loose the wild beasts against you” (Lev. 26:14,22).

The American Family Association sent out an “action alert” blasting CPAC for allowing a gay GOP group to have a booth at the event and Ed Morrisey’s Hot Air blog for criticizing Ryan Sorba’s moronic and gratuitous gay-baiting at the event. The alert was written by Bryan Fischer and it says:

Not only was GOPROUD welcomed at CPAC, an event which is supposed to be the annual showcase for conservative values, the organization was allowed to sponsor the event, giving visibility and recognition to its effort to legitimize sexual deviancy.

In other words, for David Keene and the others who run CPAC, natural marriage is not, in their judgment, a fundamental conservative value. This conference, for the sake of truth in advertising, should be relabeled “The Libertarian Political Action Conference.” It has forfeited any legitimate claim to the “Conservative” moniker.

The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer says he’s not in favor of putting gays and lesbians in jail — he just wants them to be forced to go to “effective reparative therapy” to cure them of being gay. Someone apparently wrote to him to complain that he had suggested legal sanctions for homosexuality and he wanted to clear up any misconceptions. So he wrote back. Here’s what he said:

Sen. Jon Kyl is not alone in displaying rank hypocrisy on the subject of judicial filibusters. A conservative group called the Third Branch Conference, headed by Manuel Miranda, has written a letter to all 40 Republican Senators demanding that they filibuster the Sotomayor nomination. Oh, they try and make a distinction between what they call a “Democratic filibuster” and a “traditional filibuster” but we’ll see how little that means in a moment. Here’s their fanciful rationalization:

Some hack named Bryan Fischer has a column at the Worldnutdaily defending Idaho Rep. Bill Sali for his ignorant comments about the Hindu prayer and a Muslim in Congress somehow damaging the country by making God mad. He starts by responding to Sali’s critics…kinda:

Sali has been called everything from a “brainless bigot” to “stark raving mad” to “ugly and dangerous” to “spectacularly stupid,” and he has been compared to a “deranged person shouting at pigeons on a street corner” by hate-filled, vitriolic left-wing bloviators on blogs such as The Carpetbagger Report and Daily Kos.

Certainly the role of religion in American history is worth dialogue and debate. But you’d never know it by listening to the screeching voices of secular fundamentalists, who, in their hatred for all things Christian, don’t want to discuss but only to destroy anyone who would dare defend the historic role of Judeo-Christian values in America’s public life.

Todd Starnes, a member of the media himself (well, Fox News anyway), says it’s all the fault of the “liberal media” that Donald Trump comes off as “bombastic” with his campaign rhetoric. Is there any limit to the things that liberal media can force conservatives to say and do?
