A new neighbor has joined in the upscale western Berlin’s Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district – the Church of scientology. The residents are not very happy.
Hamburg, of course, banned all activities of the Scientologists (to hell with religious freedom, huh?).
So what does Berlin do? Its officials came up with an innovative answer – they defined Scientology as neither Religion nor ideology. It is business, they say. So under the rigid Sunday Closing laws of Germany its offices (read Churches) will remain closed on .. well.. Sundays!! So, they are free to advertise or canvas (read preach) on the street on any other, but Sunday Church? Sorry. That aint done in Germany!
Was it the Europeans who were bothered by the Muslim reaction to the Mohammad cartoons? Same difference!
