Why is Indian Govt. in a hurry to get out of Kashmir??

I just don’t get the urgency of the Indian political establishment in hurrying to get out of Kashmir and the Siachen area? We have known how unreliable Musharraf and his band of men are.. and we cannot afford a folly of that magnitude! I wonder if Manmohan Singh is readying to be perennially known as the guy who gave Kashmir away to Pakistan.. almost besting Indira Gandhi’s 1971 act of returning 90,000 prisoners for NOTHING in return!! Moreover, where the f**k is the evidence that anything has changed over the years as far as the terrorist camps are concerned?

Even as PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is pressing for immediate reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir, the Army has advised the political leadership to wait till after the summer months, when infiltration from across the Line of Control (LoC) goes up, before taking any decision in this regard.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also apprised of the fact that the terrorist infrastructure was still intact across the LoC in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and the security forces could not let their guard down.

Favouring a wait and watch policy, the Army was of the opinion that the present ground position did not permit reduction of troop strength in the State and wanted to review the situation after the summer months, sources said here on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned that Army chief General JJ Singh visited Jammu and Kashmir last week to assess the ground situation first hand and reviewed the prevailing security scenario with the brass of the Northern Command.

Explaining the opposition to troop withdrawal, sources said the mountain passes are blocked by heavy snow during the winters. They open up April onwards after the snow melts and enables terrorists to sneak into Kashmir.

The Northern Command, responsible for guarding the LoC and carrying out counterinsurgency operations, in its latest fortnightly situation assessment report, said besides this crucial factor, the security forces also wanted to study the pattern of infiltration, allegiance of the infiltrators and type of weapons smuggled in by them.

Elaborating on this phenomenon, sources said the security forces wanted to review the pattern of infiltration in terms of areas witnessing it more than other zones.
