All of this prep to be sure baby #2 has a comfortable space to be in our home, has got me thinking lots of preparation in general.
When I was pregnant with our 1st son Ransom I remember spending hours over the course of the summer moving our office into a different room & very unfortunately moving 1/2 of our house out into the garage which never fully recovered until a few months ago.
With this pregnancy, we’ve also spent so much time re-arranging & thankfully, tossing out junk as well as donating to the local Goodwill.
I’m convinced we could still go through & give away or throw away 1/3 of everything we own and be just as happy. Actually, happier as the result of a cleaner, less cluttered home. A gal can dream can’t she? Dave & I are both pack-rats. Dave being king of all pack-rats.
More hours were spent on Sat., cooking meals, cleaning and preparing for the little man whom we thought may have made his big debut this weekend since I had 4 contractions in one hour on Friday night. My lovely mother’n’law & I made a (really good) pot roast, & a giant 7 pound chicken & froze much of it for post-baby.
What kind of things do you spend hours, month or even years preparing for and are they the best things?
I realized I’ll have spent hundreds of hours preparing for my children. (And then of course who needs to even bother calculating how much of our life we give to caring for them). I’ll spend over 6 years of my life getting a Masters of Divinity which will -hopefully- prepare me for the next stage of ministry.
I’ve also spent a lot of regrettable time not preparing enough for things like our financial future or an escape plan if there’s a fire in our house…. (and everything in between).
Today, for example I went through & read the 20 pages or so from What to Expect When Your Expecting on the phases of labor. Last night, I picked up Secrets of the Baby Whisperer to get myself ready for this crazy newborn journey again. Honestly, it just felt triflin’ not to be more prepared when I have these books on the shelf.
(In a random pregnancy update: I am 100% confident the baby has dropped. Which at the very least, means pre-labor is starting. The pressure now is enormous. I’ve had contractions on & off all weekend & am hoping the Dr. will give me good news tomorrow morning as to when our little ankle-biter will show his face. Also, we finally have a 1st name! Not revealing though until he’s born, so don’t ask. Lastly, I’m planning to tweet my labor, so if you’d like to get the blow-by-blow of my labor via my hospital bedside, follow me on twitter! 😉)
So, what are you preparing for? Is it a worthy goal? Is it a waste of your energy & talent?
OR
Is there anything you need to be preparing yourself for that you keep avoiding for all the million reasons there are to avoid adult responsibility?
Just wonderin’ 😉
