Try Not To Settle for Anything Less Than An Amazing Life

Try Not To Settle for Anything Less Than An Amazing Life October 7, 2012

I’m a little more than half way through This Ordinary Adventure: Settling Down Without Settling by Adam & Christine Jeske.

An excerpt from the book:

“We want to be fully original and also fit squarely within a narrowly defined cool.  We want our children to be brilliant and also never to care whether they are brilliant.  We want to look like we don’t need anything and also never lack anything.  We want to be able to apply for any job on the planet but not have to compete against seven billion other applicants.  We want to reach our highest dreams, make something eternal, never have bad hair days and show off our bellies with meaningful but discreet tattoos and great abs.”

I found myself underlining & Amen-ing this and many other thoughts in this helpful little book!  If you feel this tension this book is for you.

Or, if you’re someone who consistently feels tempted to fold into the culture, to keep up with the Joneses, live like the Smiths and aspire to the Jolie-Pitt’s than this one’s for you.  It addresses the problems some of us more affluent folks face in deciding what kind of life we’re going to live…

Are our lives going to be amazing or are we settling for status quo?

Wait a minute? Are you calling yourself affluent, Grace?  Well, yeah.  I all ready mentioned how I’m personally, quite rich by the world’s standards.  Good chances if you’re a reader of mine you are too.  And sometimes, let’s just face it y’all, people from 1st world wealthy countries like the U.S. can get caught up in a world of problems exactly because of our money.  We can buy our way into living a life of caricature.

What I enjoyed most was Christine’s honest revelations about her struggles to find her happy place in parenting.  As a Mama, I always feel alone in my struggles, only to realize -usually later- that someone else has had this same struggle and navigated it well.  This is what the Jeske’s have gifted us with in this book, a navigation guide to NOT settle in many different area’s of life.

But this book isn’t only about just money or parenting, it’s an incredibly thought-through challenge to live amazing days in the midst of your “normal” life.  It covers everything from career to identity to money and family to community and choosing the life that matters most.

I highly suggest you check it out! I’m trying to live my most amazing life too and this book is challenging me to think differently in some areas I’ve been stuck. You wanna a healthy kick in the tush? Go get it.

(This is not a sponsored post but I do know Adam from my time in InterVarsity though we’ve actually never had the opportunity to meet in person! (Boo to that I say).  Affiliate links through Amazon.

You can learn more about the book at www.OrdinaryAdventure.com or at the Jeske’s Ordinary Adventure Patheos Blog.

What are the things that keep you from turning your ordinary days into amazing ones? For me, it’s generally a bit, fat dose of laziness. I know none of you struggle with laziness, so what is it for you?
