AMY WELBORN on September 11 and scandal in the Church. Well worth your time. I’d only add that in both cases, amid the shock and horror, we saw perhaps unexpected examples of loyalty, tenacity, compassion, and what Jews call t’shuva–repentance, but I’m thinking more of the literal translation, which is “return.” It’s easy to see that the internecine battles among Americans and especially American Catholics have not gone away; it’s easy to see how everyone attempts to use 9/11 or the priestly scandals to prove that the views they held 366 days ago were exactly right and require no nuancing or reassessment; but that is not all there is to remember.
