‘Cause you belong to the city You belong to the night Livin’ in a river of blogwatch Beneath the neon lights… Ampersand: Is mostly right about Garfield. To the extent that I still like it a lot more than he does, I’m willing to say it’s just a matter of taste. E-Pression: Good point re women in the workplace. I was always a little Nina Paley Cloud-o-Gloom in my workplaces, but it’s true that the other women seemed very friendly... Read more

THERE’S MORE THAN ONE KIND OF “FORBIDDEN” THOUGHT: So Salon’s little “Forbidden Thoughts of 9/11” piece, and the letters it printed in response, have found both defenders and furious attackers. The defenders make some good points (here’s Radley Balko’s take), but in the end the piece sucked, in my opinion, because it refused to make judgments, and ultimately provided a false and damaging context. What Salon refused to do was to differentiate between different types of “forbidden” thoughts. Take sick... Read more

FORGIVENESS: Body and Soul posted a thought-provoking comment on forgiveness; meanwhile there’s been a lot of discussion in Amy Welborn’s comments of whether and how and who should forgive the 9/11 attackers and sexually abusive priests. Here’s the email I sent B&S;, cleaned up and augmented but still fairly rambly. Sursum Corda also has a very good post on this subject that sums up my more theological thinking on the subject. Obviously I don’t know since I wasn’t there, but... Read more

AMY WELBORN on September 11 and scandal in the Church. Well worth your time. I’d only add that in both cases, amid the shock and horror, we saw perhaps unexpected examples of loyalty, tenacity, compassion, and what Jews call t’shuva–repentance, but I’m thinking more of the literal translation, which is “return.” It’s easy to see that the internecine battles among Americans and especially American Catholics have not gone away; it’s easy to see how everyone attempts to use 9/11 or... Read more
