makes the questionable decision to dedicate his Easter column to RFRA questions… but this is solid all the way through, really powerful at the end, and, uh, namechecks me: AFTER watching the debate about religious freedom unfold over the past week, I decided to subject myself to an interview by an imaginary — but representative — member of the press. Here is our conversation: Happy Easter! Thank you. O.K., enough pleasantries. You’re a semi-reasonable Christian. What do you think about... Read more

some glorious moments in this (YES, Javier Fernandez as Gaston, MAKE THIS HAPPEN!) although I wish they’d noted that whatever you may think of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva’s artistry (if that’s what we’re calling it), she hit a phenomenal triple axel and generally gave a really gritty, fiery performance. Also she rocked that muumuu. Link via Libresco. Read more

The choir at St Matthew’s sang this at Tenebrae last night. Amazing. And with that, I’m out. See you on the flip side. Read more

having massive esprit d’escalier about this piece, but it does some good stuff I think: …And so I wonder, when I see the multiplication of identity-politics terms and initials—LGBTQIAABBQLOL and all that—what might be hidden in these terms. Right now our discourse around the spread of identity labeling mostly takes place entirely on the labels’ own terms: Are asexuals “really” queer, or do they just have victimization envy? Is “demisexual” even a thing, or is this just how people who... Read more

reports: Recently, a group of women currently incarcerated at the 142-year-old institution (now called the Indiana Women’s Prison) began to pore over documents from the prison’s first 10 years. They had set out on an ambitious project: to write a history of the institution’s founding decade, one that tells quite a different story from the official narrative. What happens when inmates write a history of their own prison? In this case, the perspective that the group brought to the project... Read more

writes: I live in a much safer neighborhood now than the one of my youth, and in an era that is almost incomparably safer according to crime statistics. And yet I never see children playing outside unsupervised. Who would my children play with unless I organized a play date? I’ll probably never see another kid knock on my door and ask if my daughter can come out to play. Couldn’t she have texted instead? more (and see also “Do They... Read more

1. Cooking is an art, cakes are art, compelled creation of beauty is compelled speech. I feel like the denial that cakery is/should be expressive, that food bears meaning, is somehow Gnostic and class-biased (or sexist? if your grandma could do it, it must not be art?), but maybe that’s self-parody on my part. Anyway beauty + meaning, to me, pretty clearly = art. And photography is even more obviously art, right? 2. Still… I wonder how different this debate... Read more

Every word and note is a joy: Bananarama, the ‘80s UK female pop vocal group, were famous for their hits “Venus,” “I Heard a Rumor,” “Really Saying Something,” and “Cruel Summer.” Fans of the band’s bouncy bubblegum pop, might be surprised to learn the group once recorded a (completely awesome) Sex Pistols cover on an obscure 1982 soundtrack. Stylistically, they may have been world’s apart from the UK punk scene, but actually it’s where they got their start. more Read more

at the Federalist: Before you accept the immortal kiss of the vampire, ask yourself one question: Do I want to be doing the dishes for the rest of eternity? “What We Do in the Shadows” is a charming mockumentary from writer-director team Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, exploring the unglamorous side of vampire life (or death) in New Zealand. It perfectly mimics reality-show conventions, like the self-narration with which the film opens: “So it’s six in the evening, which is... Read more
